Carmen Alice (Johnson) Card

Cedar Rapids

Our lovely and sweet mother, Carmen Alice (Johnson) Card, 77, received her angel wings on May 9, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Carmen was born January 31, 1947, the youngest of three daughters, to Truman and Alice (Peterson) Johnson in Cresco, Iowa. The family relocated to Waterloo in the early 1950s.

A graduate from East Waterloo High School, she was Homecoming Queen, an Orange Girl, the angel in the school Nativity and involved in drama, on the social committee, the band council, and the senior council. After high school, she attended Beauty School and began her career as a hairdresser. She owned or co-owned three hair salons during her career; the Hair Affair in Waterloo, ExSalonce in Cedar Rapids and most recently Cache’ and Kids’ Kuts in Cedar Rapids, prior to her retirement for health reasons. She participated in the Hairdressers professional organization, Look Good, Feel Better and Girl Scouts.

On August 16, 1965, she married the love of her life, Stanley Delbert Card at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. She served as the church treasurer and sang in the choir. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Alycia Gail in 1969 and Nicole Tiffany in 1972. Carmen became a widow at age 40 when Stan died in 1988. She later shared her life with John Nost from 2003 until his death in 2010.

Family was always extremely important to Carmen. She adored being “Grammy” to Mikail, Mikenzie, and Riley, and enjoyed spoiling them with shopping trips and having them overnight for slumber parties.

She enjoyed shopping, bowling, home decorating, movies, theater, playing cards, hosting pool parties, but especially time with family and friends.

Left to mourn her passing are her daughters Alycia (Paul) Andreasen, Nicole (Jim) Rauch, her grandchildren Mikail (Zack) Keister, Mikenzie (Joshua) Andreasen, Riley Andreasen, Ben Rauch, Joe (Mollie) Rauch and Peter Rauch; great-grandchildren Ella and Kaylee Keister, Layna, Luke, Nora and Jack Rauch and her niece she considered a daughter, Sue (Al) Hughes.

Carmen was preceded in death by parents, Truman and Alice Johnson, her husband Stan, her in-laws, Millie and Gale Card and her sisters Barb Freet and Karen Walker and John Nost.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on May 17, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home located at 520 Wilson Ave. SW, in Cedar Rapids. The funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on May 18, 2024, at the funeral home, with Pastor Craig Brown officiating. Burial and Reception will follow.

Memorials may be directed to the family, for a donation to the Iowa Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association in Carmen’s name.
