C. Edwin “Ed” Young, 87, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born December 29, 1933, in Springfield, the son of Lyman Cissel and Alice Elizabeth (Canterbury) Young. He married Jean Rowley on February 14, 2018 and she survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Deborah (Dan) Stewart, Cindy (Gray) Pierson, Christie (Tim) Mattsson, and Carrie Young, all of Springfield; one daughter-in-law, Esther Young of O’Fallon, MO; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margery Fogal of Pekin; one brother, David Young of Kirkwood, MO; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Carl Young; two former wives, Marlene Taylor Young and Leann Garmers Young; sister-in-law, Judy Young; and twin brother, Cissel Eugene Young.
Ed was a resident of Springfield most of his life. He graduated from Athens Community High School where he played the trumpet in the high school band and was on the basketball team. He was a member of Athens Christian Church where he served as a deacon. Ed contributed his time as an officer for the Genealogy Society, was an Ansar Shrine Clown, served as a board member for Athens School District, and volunteered at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site.
Ed began his career as a lineman at Illinois Bell, then later as an engineer, retiring after 30 years of service. He was an avid sports fan and especially liked to watch the Steelers and Cardinals play. Some of his utmost joys were listening to music or reading a good book.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Friday, October 29, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:45 pm.
Lie-In-State: 9 – 10 am, Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Athens Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Athens Christian Church, with Pastor Ken Gennicks officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
