Clarence Rudolph Smitley

Clarence Rudolph Smitley, 79, of New Philadelphia, passed away Monday, October 25, 2021 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Phillip and Thelma (Conley) Smitley, Clarence was born January 11, 1942 in Tuscarawas County.

On May 17, 1963, Clarence married the former Shirley Miller and the couple raised two children, Daniel and Rebecca.

He was a longtime employee of Stone Creek Brick where he retired after 41 years of service.

In their younger years, Clarence and Shirley were avid square dancers and were members of the Nu-Hall Square Dancing Club. Clarence also took great pride in his 1963 Chevy Truck which he showed in numerous car shows over the years.

Clarence will be remembered by his family for being a loving and caring person who had a mind of his own.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smitley; his children, Dan (fiancé, Lori Williams) Smitley and Becky Hursey; two grandchildren, Daniel and Judy Hursey; his great-grandchildren, Carissa, Damion, Cameron, Jaxon, Savannah, Violet, Scarlet, Preston and Blade; two sisters, Neva Marsh and Shirley Richards and a sister-in-law, Judy Metz.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Betty Walton, Marge Menapace, Dorothy Waller, Libby Hahn, Mildred and Beatrice Smitley and Tom, Phillip and Daniel Smitley.

In keeping with Clarence’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services and cremation will take place through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.
