Bernard “Bernie” Dettman

TIpton

On May 25 in a quiet little room in the Iowa City Rehab Center, Bernard “Bernie” Dettman stepped into eternity. Bernie, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on Aug. 24, 1961, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Robert Edward Dettman and Irene Doris Stout Dettman.

Bernie grew up in Tipton and graduated from Tipton High School with the Class of 1980. After graduation, Bernie worked as a mechanic/truck driver for L.L. Pelling for many years and then stayed and worked as a truck driver for several local construction companies, and his last employment was driving for Louis Luers Trucking. Bernie was always a mechanic at heart. He loved snowmobiling, demo-derbies, and helping work on race cars. His knowledge and friendship will be missed.

Bernie is survived by his mother, Irene, and his brother, David (Kat) Dettman both of Oxford, Iowa, and his sister, Pam (Gary) Schoepfer of East Moline, Ill.; his sons, Jarad Dettman of Minnesota and Devin Dettman of Coralville, Iowa; his nephews, Benjamin Schoepfer and Brandel Schoepfer; and his two cats, Patches and Midnight (who live with Irene and Dave).

Bernie requested that his body be cremated and no fanfare be public so remember him in the good times. You may contribute to the charity of your choice in Bernie’s memory and share your online condolences at www.fryfuneralhome.com.
