Zackary Dalzell

Zackary Todd Dalzell, 41, of Lexington, KY, passed away on Tuesday, August 5th at home, by his own hand. Zack faced the heavy burden of depression and alcohol use disorder for much of his life. Despite these struggles, the care and community he found at the Hope Center in Lexington gave us more time with him than we might otherwise have had — for that, we are deeply grateful. If healthcare were a right, and if Zack could have had consistent access to healthcare throughout his adult life, we believe this could have been prevented.
Zack was a kind, intelligent, and gentle soul. In his younger years, he found joy in being part of the chess and academic teams at school, where his quick mind and quiet determination shone. He worked at several restaurants in Lexington and took pride in his work. Though social anxiety often made human connections difficult, Zack had a deep love for animals and was a devoted and loving cat dad. He also had a remarkable talent for nurturing houseplants — something he enjoyed teasing his sister about with great pride.
He is survived by his mother, Donna Dalzell of Lexington; his sister, Beth Dalzell of Toledo, OH; and his beloved 1995 Toyota Corolla, which continues to run with surprising vigor — a testament to Zack’s practicality.
Zack’s passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of those who loved him. We may never fully understand the pain he carried or what led him to his decision that day. But we will remember the best of him — his warmth, his wit, his compassion. Before he left us, he wrote “please forgive me” on a note, and we have. We hold on to the hope that he is finally at peace, and that his cherished cat, Neo, was waiting to greet him with a purr on the other side.
Donna and Beth would like anyone who is going through a dark time to know this: you are loved more than you know. Please don’t be afraid to reach out. Your presence matters.
A celebration of life for Zack will be held at Bella Notte Italian Trattoria in Lexington on Saturday, October 11th from 1pm to 4pm. Please stop by to share memories, hugs, and smiles.
In Zack’s memory, and in support of others facing similar battles, please consider making a donation to The Hope Center at hopectr.org.
Care Cremation and Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with final care.
