On the morning of Friday, June 20, 2025, a true Southern belle, Yvonne Newcomb Doty, Daytona Beach, passed from our midst to be with her parents, William Edward and Mildred Newcomb and her Lord and Savior in Heaven. A friend of all and supporter to many students and faculty, as well as the community, she led a full life. She was born at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, and grew up in Annandale, Virginia where she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Alexandria in 1968. She graduated from the University of Tennessee (GO VOLS!), with a Master’s in library science. She also received a degree in 1987 from Miami University in Ohio with a degree in Advanced Management Program. She moved to the DeLand area in 1974 where she began her career as children’s librarian at the Volusia County Public Library. In 1977, she began her 32-year tenure at DSC (formerly DBCC) in many capacities including Director of Library Services, Deans of Educational Technology, and School of Business & Hospitality, and retired in 2009. She was active in FACC, LRSC, & FDLC statewide, as well as serving on the SACS accreditation committee. While working at the college, she was elected Daytona Beach City Commissioner of Zone 2 in 2005. In her free time, during and after her career at the college, she served as President of the Volusia Literacy Council, mentor at Bonner Elementary School, Junior League of DB, and member of the American Association of University Women. Through the years, she led and was involved in Bible studies at Central Baptist, DB, First United Methodist Church, OB, and Unity Church in DB and Yoga. She loved her mental stimulation activities like Mahjong, a couple of book clubs, volunteering at Halifax Urban Ministries, but most importantly rooting for the VOLS! She hosted many parties with her usual Southern cooking because that was the ONLY food worth eating, y’all! She is survived by her loving husband, Jack Marshal Doty, of 46 years, and a host of cousins.
Dale Woodward is in charge, and there will be a Celebration of Life at their home, 1415 N. Grandview Ave. Daytona Beach, FL 32118 on Saturday, July 19th. Please drop by between the hours of 2-5 and share your happy memories with Jack. In lieu of flowers, Jack asks that donations be made to either the Volusia County Literacy Council (https://volusialiteracy.org/donate/) or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (https://donate.imaginationlibrary.com/)
