Garden City- Wilma M. Baier, 95, died on Friday, July 18, 2025, at her home in Garden City. She was born on May 20, 1930, in Schoenchen, Kansas, the daughter of Wendelin & Monica (Depperschmidt) Gottschalk. She was the second oldest of nine siblings and was the oldest daughter. Wilma graduated from Schoenchen Rural High School in May 1948 and continued her higher education when she was recruited into the St. Catherine Nursing Program in Garden City earning her RN. It was in Garden City that she met and married Martin J. Baier on August 4, 1952. He proceeded her in death on November 28, 2010.
Wilma worked as a Registered Nurse at St Catherine Hospital, Garden Valley Retirement Village, and Terrace Garden Nursing Home. Prior to those positions, she also devoted many years working for doctors in private practice. She was a member of St Dominic Catholic Church where she attended daily mass well into her eighties. She was also a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing, cheating at cards and dominos as well as camping trips with family and friends at area lakes. Her favorite spots were Cedar Bluff and Wilson Reservoir. She struggled to keep house plants alive but grew beautiful tulips and peony flowers outside her front porch and a backyard garden full of tomatoes and cucumbers that she shared with family and friends. She was a well-known seamstress that handmade wedding dresses for both her daughters. She had a robust collection of sewing patterns from McCalls and Simplicity but was talented enough to create clothing using butcher paper to make her own patterns.
She is survived by her children- Gary L. Baier and Rodney A. Baier both of Garden City, Timothy G. Baier of Augusta, Kansas, Monica (Scott) Galliart of Bull Shoals, Arkansas, Mark A. Baier of Augusta, Kansas and Wendy (Brett) Pollman of Wichita, Kansas. Grandchildren – Amy (Steve) Zimmerman, Sandy Baier Reel (Ryan Weems), Aaron (Miyu Toyoshima) Galliart, Ashley (Josh) Mueller, Dalton (Caitlin) Pollman and Jordan Pollman. Great-Grandchildren – Braegan Zimmerman, Ellie Mueller, Cooper Zimmerman, Asher Galliart, Cove Pollman, Finn Pollman, and Arden Galliart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son- Michael L. Baier and his wife Kimberly Baier of Holcomb, Kansas. As well as her brothers Virgil, Alvin, Melvin, Val, Larry, Wayne, and sisters Carlotta and Carol.
Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Friday, July 25th and Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 26th both at St Dominic Catholic Church with Rev Ben Green as Celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St Dominic Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home 412 North 7th Garden City, KS. 67846.
