Mrs. Vivienne Gertrude Williams, 97, departed this life on Thursday, June 5, 2025 in Waterbury, CT. She was the wife of the late Samuel A. Williams. Vivienne was born on July 31, 1927 in Grand Turk, Turk and Caicos Island in the West Indies to the late Benjamin and Sarah (Tucker) Williams.
She was educated in Grand Turk Public School. At age of 17, she graduated from Crawford High School. She attended Kingston College, Kingston, Jamaica and earned a 4-year Teaching Certificate. At the age of 19, she returned to her hometown and taught 5th and 6th grade English and Math. She was later promoted to assistant superintendent over the schools in Turks Islands.
In 1954 she joined her husband, Samuel, and resided in Waterbury, CT. On the first Sunday in June 1954, Mrs. Williams joined Mt. Olive AME Zion Church and was a faithful, dedicated member until her passing. She served as church secretary for over 40 years. She also served as Class Leader and Sunday School Teacher. She loved to sing and sang on 3 choirs including Gospel Chorus (one of the original of the choir). She was also a member of the Missionary Society having served as chairwoman.
Mrs. Williams was also involved in the Christian Education Department of Hartford of the AME Zion Church and served as Director of Children for over 20 years. She was also a member of the Waterbury Unit of Church Women United and served as correspondence secretary, as well as a member of the Waterbury Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. serving as the membership chairwoman.
Mrs. Williams leaves to cherish her memory, son, Clifford (Kathy) Williams of Portland, ME; granddaughters, Queen Beyla, Jessica Williams, and Taccara Williams; grandsons, Eric Crosby-Williams, Darryle Crosby-Williams, and Gerald Williams; daughter-in-law, Loretta Williams; godchildren, Hon. Derrick Taylor and Jaclyn Davis; and a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Williams; and sons, Robert Williams and Claude Williams.
