Triple-pint heist lands ice cream thief in the cooler before returning to swipe fourth pint immediately after leaving Carson City jail
- June 5, 2025

A Carson City teen was arrested twice in a two-day period after allegedly stealing ice cream from a grocery store, then returning as soon as he was released from jail the next day to steal another pint.
According to the arrest report, the 18-year-old was first arrested at an E. William Street grocery store for shoplifting Tuesday afternoon after deputies were dispatched over a reported ice cream theft.
Upon arrival, deputies met with a manager who stated the teen had entered the store several times during the day and stolen multiple items.
First, the teen allegedly stole a drink, then returned later to steal an additional three pint-sized containers of Haagen-Dazs ice cream costing $15.87; however, the manager was unsure what the drink was or its price.
Another deputy located the teen at Mills Park, and the reporting deputy radioed asking if he currently had three pints of ice cream with him, and the second deputy confirmed he did.
Deputies approached the teen in the park and noted he had three ice cream containers with him along with “some other miscellaneous food.” He was taken into custody and booked for petit larceny.
On Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to the same grocery store on report of the teen shoplifting, again, immediately after being released from the jail.
Upon arrival, deputies met with a manager who said the teen who’d stolen items the day prior had returned, despite being trespassed after Tuesday’s arrest, to swipe another pint of Haagen-Dazs, a coconut water, and pre-cut mixed melons before walking out of the store. The total cost was $13.78.
According to the report, the teen was arrested in the area of Long and State Street, but the report did not identify how they found him or if the items were located. He was released to jail staff without incident.

Carson City man arrested after drunkenly climbing into passenger seat to take a nap — with car disabled in the middle of the roadway.
— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested on a DAS violation Wednesday after deputies were dispatched to the area of E. 5 and Roop on report of a disabled vehicle in the road way just before 4:30 a.m.
Deputies located the vehicle facing west in the travel lane east of Roop St with a male asleep in the front passenger seat. Deputies knocked on the driver’s side front window to wake the man, but he did not wake up.
Deputies then opened the passenger side door to see if he was breathing. After shaking him in the seat, the man woke up, and had a “very strong odor of alcohol” when he spoke, and his eyes were red and “very watery” according to the report.
After being asked why he was sleeping in the roadway, the man said he was “parked and taking a nap.” Deputies said he was in the travel lane, and the vehicle was not drivable due to a transmission fluid leak, but he again said he was parked and sleeping.
The report stated the man’s speech was very slurred, and that he admitted to sleeping because he had been drinking.
Deputies took the man into custody and his vehicle was towed due to being disabled in the roadway. The vehicle had damage to the right front fender area, and an active transmission fluid leak according to the report.
Deputies searched the area for any signs of a vehicle accident or damage, and nothing was found.
A preliminary breath test resulted in a .194 PBT at around 5:30 a.m.
Bail: $3,000 cash only
Multiple DUI felon arrested for another DUI
A 54-year-old Dayton man, Shawn GW Burhus, was arrested for felony DUI as someone with a prior felony DUI conviction.
Burhus was arrested Tuesday at around 11 p.m. after deputies were driving in the area of E. William and Humbolt Lane when they observed a vehicle almost rear ending the car in front of it after slowly getting into the lane.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop, and the vehicle eventually pulled over in a grocery store parking lot.
When asked if he knew why he was being stopped, Burhus allegedly told the deputy that he had been talking on his cell phone. The deputy asked for ID, and Burhus said he did not have his wallet.
The deputy noted there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from his vehicle, and Burhus had red watery eyes and a thick slurred speech. The deputy also noted there were “open/closed alcoholic Budweiser beer cans” behind the passenger seat.
Burhus told the deputy he was coming from Dayton and going to Reno to pick up a friend from the airport, but the deputy noted the man had been driving towards Dayton on E William, not from it.
The deputy asked Burhus how much he’d had to drink and Burhus allegedly said “not much.” Then he said he’d been at a neighborhood bar/casino chain and had consumed three beers.
When asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests, the man said “no, I’m not impaired” and gave the same answer when asked if he would provide a PBT. After the deputy continued to explain this was “his opportunity o prove he was not impaired,” Burhus finally consented to a field sobriety test.
He performed the test, which showed six out of six and eight out of eight clues of intoxication on the tests. During one of the tests, Burhus said his “equilibrium was off due to this heart attack from three years ago,” and told the deputy they could call his doctor to confirm.
He later consented to a PBT which resulted in a .219 BAC.
Burhus was taken into custody and transported to the jail to conduct evidentiary blood testing, and since his car was parked legally, it was left on scene. He was booked for felony DUI with prior DUI felony and released to jail staff without incident.
Bail: $15,000
Woman arrested for warrant, possession after caller reported she was ‘suspiciously’ picking up rocks
A 35-year-old Yerington woman was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and a gross misdemeanor bench warrant issued March 2025 with no bail after someone reported a suspicious person near E. William and Gold Dust Way.
The call came in just after midnight Wednesday and the caller stated the woman was walking westbound from the intersection and was picking up rocks, and the caller was “concerned about property damage.”
Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the woman and asked if she was okay or needed medical attention, and she said no. Dispatch advised the woman had a no bail warrant issued out of the second judicial district court for failing to appear on a charge of battery against a protected person.
She was taken into custody, and the arresting deputy asked if she had any narcotics on her person, which she denied. However, while at the jail during the booking process, a small gray baggie with a white crystalline substance fell out of her bra, according to the arrest report.
The substance returned with a presumptive positive for methamphetamine, and she was booked on the additional charge.
No bail.
Carson City woman arrested for possession, DAS violations after “reacting” to deputy in parking lot
A 50-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for possession and two DAS violations after “having a reaction” to deputies while driving through a casino parking lot.
According to the arrest report, deputies were in the parking lot of a Goni Road casino at around 2 a.m Wednesday morning when they witnessed a vehicle pull into the parking lot. They said the driver looked directly at the deputy and then continued through the parking lot and onto Old Hot Springs Road.
The reporting deputy said that they knew the driver had a reaction to their presence in the parking lot, which is why they “did not stop and exited the parking lot, creating distance from me.”
The deputy stopped the vehicle and spoke to the woman who said she was leaving a friend’s house and heading home, and “appeared nervous, with her hands shaking while looking for documents.”
When asked if she had any weapons, she said no, but when asked if she had any illegal drugs, she allegedly “paused, looked directly down towards her purse, then stated no.”
On a search of her person and the vehicle, deputies located a white crystalline substance inside of a purse which returned with a presumptive positive for methamphetamine, along with a white napkin with black residue on it, “consistent with residue from a pipe.” She also later told deputies she had a meth pipe in her pants near her right ankle.
She was taken into custody without issue.
Bail: $5,637; $2,000 cash only.
