Suzanne Schamadan
Suzanne “Sue” Schamadan of Mansfield, OH passed peacefully at home on Saturday, June 14th. Age 95, Sue was born January 9, 1930 in Hubbard, OH to Carl and Lydia (Reese) Gangloff. While studying nursing at Capital University in Columbus, OH, Sue met her future husband William “Bill” Schamadan. She completed her nursing training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH, and worked there for a time. Sue and Bill married on June 26, 1954 and joyously celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year.
In 1963, when Bill finished his residency in Columbus, the couple settled in Mansfield, OH where Bill joined the OBGYN practice of Dr. George Evans. While raising and nurturing their three daughters was most important to Sue, she always found time to be involved in church and community activities.
Sue was an active member, officer or board member of many organizations including CACY, CHAP, United Way, AAUW, Richland County Foundation, the Art Center, and the YMCA. She was a graduate of Leadership Unlimited, and received the JoAnn Dutton award. Sue gave generously of her time and talents to the Rehabilitation Services of NCO, where she even joined the Sign-a-Long choir, and to the Hospital where she taught at the School of Nursing and later volunteered in the Gift Shop for over 30 years.
As a long time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Sue was dedicated to enriching the church community and its missions by teaching, serving on the board and various committees, playing the bells, and ensuring the building of the columbarium into which she will be interred.
Sue was a faithful and welcoming friend and loved joining her friends for book club, bridge, garden club, Nomads, and tennis – which she played well into her 80s! Rarely did she miss sending a birthday card or a card acknowledging special events in the lives of her friends. Her daughters’ friends knew that they were always welcome on her back porch for homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Family was paramount for Sue. She made sure family gatherings occurred frequently including a decades long tradition of spending time together on Sanibel Island, FL. All gatherings had to be well documented, so Sue leaves behind a wealth of family photos. One room in her home is fondly referred to as the “Sanibel Room” because of the many family trip photo collages lining the walls.
Sue is survived by her husband, Bill; daughters Barb Renda, Beth (John) VanVolkinburg, and Amy (Frankie) Smith; grandchildren Emily (Morgan) Marr, Jenny Hartson, Carl VanVolkinburg, Kyle (Nikki) Hartson, Eric VanVolkinburg, Maggie Smith, and Abby (Kat) Hinsch; great-grandchildren Ari, Charlie, Sterling, Forrest, and Isla; and her brother Robert (Barbara) Gangloff. Sue was preceded in death by son-in-law John Renda.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, July 25 at 2pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 525 W. Cook Rd. Following the service (approx. 3:30 pm) a Celebration Reception will be held at the family home, 735 Courtwright Blvd, Mansfield, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Sue may be made to OhioHealth Compassus Hospice or the Richland County Foundation.
