Steven “Stevie” Hemphill
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Steven L. Hemphill, lovingly known as “Stevie”, who departed this life at the age of 67. He was born in Quincy, Illinois, and passed away in Springfield, Illinois.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, Stevie will be deeply missed by all who have the pleasure of knowing him.
Stevie is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Hemphill of Springfield; his children, Staci Crane of Springfield and Joseph (Amanda) Crane of Quincy, IL. He was a proud and doting grandfather to Isaac and Jonah Crane, whom he adored more than anything. He also leaves behind his older brother, Clint Hemphill; his mother-in-law, Marilyn Justus; and his sisters-in-law, Rebecca Fortney of Ponca City, OK, Cynthia (Bill) Dixie of Conyers, GA, and Kim (Chris) Campbell of Quincy, IL. Stevie is remembered fondly by a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who brought him joy and laughter throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Grace Hemphill, and his brothers, Ronald “Red”, Lary “Sam” and Paul, who now joins in eternal rest. Stevie was a devoted son who honored his parents’ legacy throughout the values he lived with every day: loyalty, kindness, and hard work.
Stevie graduated from Quincy Senior High and after graduation attended John Wood Community College where he received his associates degree in accounting. He was a roofer by trade – dedicated, hard-working, and fiercely loyal to his craft. Throughout his life, he stood firmly with his union brothers, championing the rights of working people and taking pride in every roof he helped raise.
More than anything, Stevie was the best grandpa of all time. Whether it was sharing belly laughs, playing computer games like Dungeon Siege, or simply spending quiet moments side by side. Stevie poured his love into every second with his grandsons. Those gaming sessions and cherished memories will forever live on in Isaac and Jonah’s hearts, a testament to the boundless joy and patience he brought into their lives.
Known far and wide for his signature “Stevie talks”, he was the kind of man who could brighten a room with his stories, sharp wit, and unmistakable presence. Whether it was a simple visit or a long conversation, time spent with Stevie always left a lasting impression. His humor, generosity, and spirited nature were the glue of countless family gatherings.
To know Stevie was to enjoy him – and to laugh a little more. His voice and his stories may be silent now, but the memories of those “Stevie talks” will echo in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
Visitation: 10:30 am – 11:30 am, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
