Stephen Bybel
September 24, 1927 – May 2, 2025
Stephen Bybel of Yonkers, New York, passed away, peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, May 2, 2025, at age 97.
Stephen, the son of the late John and Julia Bybel was born on September 24,1927 in Jasionka, Ukraine. Stephen arrived in the United States after World War II. He settled in Yonkers, New York where he met and is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Anna (Duda).
Stephen was a life-long, faithful parishioner whose family was one of the founding members of St. Michael’s the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, Yonkers, NY. He worked for 37 years at General Motors in Tarrytown, NY.
Though Stephen was a quiet and calm man, his love for his wife, family, friends, and church always came through in his smile and support for all, especially for the Ukrainian Heritage Festival, CYM and Lemko organizations.
He is also survived by his sons, John and wife Lisa Bybel of Yonkers, NY; Michael and wife Elizabeth Bybel of Cedar Park, Texas.Grandchildren: Jennifer and Edwin Lown, Drs. Michael and Kathleen Bybel, Andrea Bybel and husband Justin Bottiglieri, Steven and Nicole Bybel, Andrew and Gabriela Bybel, Melissa Surber and partner Michael Emery, Elizabeth and Michael Pollock, David and Audrey Surber, and 9 great-grandchildren. SIster-in-law Mary LaConte. Nephews and nieces: William and Natalie Lupichuk, Michael and Kimberly Lupichuk, William and Elaine LaConte, Sonia Solomon, Lesia and Roman Zelyk, Roman Solomon, and Oksana and John Fuke. From Europe, his nieces Natalia Opryshko of Ukraine and Maria Lenko of Poland.
Stephen was preceded in death by his sisters Maria Iwanicki, Patricia Lupichuk, Anna Lenko, his brother Andrew Bybel, and nephew Andrei Lupichuk.
Family and friends are invited to pay respects at Duchynski-Cherko (Community) Funeral Home, 601 Yonkers Ave, Yonkers, NY, from 4:00-8:00 PM, Friday, May 9th, 2025, with Panachyda at 7:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, 21 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Burial to follow at Holy Spirit Cemetery, 141 Sarah Wells Trail, Campbell Hall, NY 10916.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephen’s memory may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church – Church Needs, or to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church – Fund for Ukraine.
