More than 30 educational leaders and school superintendents representing 15 school districts from across the country spent three days last week visiting and learning from the Carson City School District at Carson High School.

The educational visits were part of The School Superintendents Association (AASA) Redefining Ready Cohort and not only highlighted the Carson City School District’s innovative approach to student achievement and college, career and life readiness, but also the power of its community partnerships and collaborations.

During the visit, attendees learned about the Carson City School District’s work toward goals of the Strategic Plan, the district’s focus on employability skills for grades 6-12, successes with Advanced Placement (AP) participation and pass rates, dual-credit opportunities through its JumpStart Program with Western Nevada College, the Industry Recognized Credentials (IRCs) that many students earn before they graduate and Work-Based Learning opportunities provided for students.

The group also toured Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, gaining insight into how hands-on, industry-aligned courses prepare students for college and career pathways.

Superintendents also heard about the district’s College and Career Readiness initiatives, which include partnerships with local businesses, government agencies and higher education institutions that help students gain real-world experience and valuable credentials before graduation. Panel discussions with community partners and students reinforced the benefits for all involved.

In addition, student-led tours featured Carson High’s Health Science program (HOSA), the engineering lab, the career closet, the greenhouse and the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. (NJROTC) program. Later, attendees learned about the Carson City School District’s Community Partnership Recognition Program, an initiative that honors and strengthens collaborations between schools and community organizations working together to support student success.

“The fundamental premise of this Redefining Ready Cohort is that being college, career and life ready cannot be measured by a limited-scope test taken one day a year,” said Andrew Feuling, superintendent of the Carson City School District. “We’re proud to share how we go beyond the test for Carson City’s kids by showcasing the work of our educators, students and partners to ensure every student is prepared for life after graduation. Hosting school superintendents and educational leaders from across the country gives us an opportunity to exchange ideas and showcase the progress we’ve made through collaboration and innovation.”

The visit was part of AASA’s ongoing effort to spotlight school districts implementing forward-thinking strategies that can serve as models nationwide.
