Santiago Calderon Ortiz lived an extraordinary life filled with hard work, family devotion, and an unwavering spirit of hope and adventure. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Santiago’s journey began with the bracero program, carrying hope in his pocket and the clothes on his back, determined to embrace the American dream.
Santiago’s early years in the U.S. were spent as a migrant worker, tirelessly picking fruits, which later included working alongside his beloved parents. These decades of labor symbolized his perseverance and deep connection to the land. His career then transitioned to welding, where his resilience and dedication shone. Alongside his brother, Leon Calderon, Santiago was recognized in the Press-Enterprise article “Hot and Cold,” which honored their steadfast commitment to enduring grueling conditions, often exceeding 100 degrees, while working at Clow Corp.
In his later years, Santiago enjoyed the land once more, working as a landscaper and taking joy in nurturing nature’s beauty. He also dedicated himself to exploring new adventures with his cherished wife, Flerida Ortiz. Together, they embarked on journeys in his white truck, discovering the world and savoring life’s quiet moments. Santiago found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren, lovingly taking them to and from school and building toys together – a testament to his devotion to family.
Santiago was married to the love of his life, Flerida Ortiz, for over 60 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful family, including seven daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His unwavering love and pride in his family were the cornerstones of his life, and their shared values and accomplishments brought him his greatest joy
Santiago’s philosophy of life was encapsulated in the word “someday,” a reflection of his hopeful outlook and belief in the boundless potential of life. His optimism inspired those around him to dream and persevere, embracing challenges with faith in brighter tomorrows.
Santiago is survived by his beloved wife, Flerida Ortiz; his daughters and their significant others; his sister, Silvia Ortiz; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and an extended family who honor his love, adventures, and legacy. His life stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us all to cherish family, embrace challenges, and nurture the dreams of “someday.”
May his memory live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him and in the joy of life’s small yet profound moments he treasured.
