Samuel Mathis Jr.

Samuel was born in Atlantic City on August 23, 1939, and died peacefully at home on September 26, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Sam grew up at the beach as a lifeguard and rower, therefore swimming and going to the beach remained a passion. He retired from Bell and Howell in 2010 as their VP of International Sales. Sam liked to keep busy, so he picked up work at Pitney Bowes, became a golf ranger at local courses, and liked yard work/gardening, talking to the neighbors, and spending time with his “girls” and grandkids.

Samuel was a past member of Atlantic City Shine Club, Atlantic Lodge No 221, and the Crescent Temple in Trenton, New Jersey. He was involved in Sunrise United Methodist Church as board member, greeter and Men’s Ministry. Sam was extremely proud to be one of the board members of the Holly Springs Food Cupboard, along with serving as the Scout Liaison for Eagle Projects and their Director of Fundraising. He was an active member of Holly Springs Masonic Lodge No 115, also serving as chaplain to Fuquay- Varina Masonic Lodge 258.

He is survived by wife, Carole Anne of Holly Spring, North Carolina; and his three daughters: Pamela Lynn, Kimberly Ilene (Cindi Marks), Kristin Anne (Cory L. Schmoyer). His three grandchildren: Timothy Ian, Abigail Lynn, Ryan Lee; and Bella, our golden doodle. Also, the New Jersey nieces and nephew: Karen (Gordy Bew), Bernie Dillon, Gayle (Rod Jones), June (Jim Byrnes), Bette (John Strauss), Sheree (John Enders) and families.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents: Mary A. (Bosler) and Samuel S. Mathis, Sr.; and sisters: Lilian (Bernard Dillon), Bette Jane (Frank Jones).

The Mathis family offers a special thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Huang and to Transitions Life Care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday October 18, 2025, at the Sunrise United Methodist Church, 5420 Sunset Lake Road in Holly Springs, North Carolina – Mysunrise.org. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, making a donation to the Holly Springs Food Cupboard, 621 W. Holly Springs Rd. PO Box 268, Holly Springs, NC 27540 or at hsfoodcupboard.org, would be appreciated.
