Ronald William Sibbitts, 92, of Canton Russell Road, Canton passed in his sleep Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Gouverneur Hospital after a brief stay for rehab after hip surgery.

 

“Ron” was born a son to the late James Elwin and Grace E. (Loucks) Sibbitts in Russell NY on December 15, 1932.  He was a 1950 graduate of Canton High School and later attended Canton A.T.I..

 

Ron operated the family dairy farm for nearly 50 years from 1950-1997 and earned the Dairy of Distinction award.

 

On April 2,1955 he married his beloved Ortha Whitmore at the Canton United Methodist Church. The two were married for 59 years until Ortha sadly passed away in 2014. Together they lovingly raised five children.

 

Ron was a faithful member of Canton UM Church where he served as a trustee and hosted many, many dinners over the years. He cared deeply for his community and showed support through serving on various committees and boards including Hospitality Group, Racquette Valley Habitat for Humanity, Canton Central School Board of Education, Farm Bureau, NYSDHI, Grasse River Agway, North Country Milk Producers, and Farm Credit Board. Ron also enjoyed being on the LeBerge & Curtis Bowling Team.

 

Ron enjoyed staying active by taking trips across the country, wintering in Punta Gorda FL, attending Camp Aldersgate and serving on the Family Life Weekend Committee. In his years of retirement, he was also fond of doing field work for other area farmers. What people say Ron will be most remembered for is the twinkle in his eye.

 

Ron is survived by his dear friend and companion Ella Morter of Canton; two sons Gary (Terry) Sibbitts (St. Louis, MO), Paul (Patricia) Sibbitts (Canton); three daughters Marie (John) Montgomery (Auburn), Elaine (David) Noble (Morrisonville) and Gail (James) Steigerwald (Moravia); Sister-In-Law Janice Sibbitts; 13 grandchildren Jordan, Robert and Victoria, Jay and Brittany, Grace and Steven, David, Bryan and Stephanie, Erich and Nicole, Alex and Maddie, Patrick and Stacy, Rebecca and Tyler, Brandon and Michaela, Elizabeth and Katherine; thirteen great-grandchildren Katy, Emily, Eli, Hailey, Nathan, Jacob, Adalyn, Reagan, Lincoln, Vera, Henry, Xander and Scottlyn; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents and wife Ortha, he was predeceased by a brother Richard Sibbitts and sisters Lavern Lattrell, Lois Miller and Jennie Wells.

 

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 7 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 8 at 10:00 AM at the Canton United Methodist Church at 41 Court Street. Ron will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the church, all are welcome.
