Reverend Julius Bennett

Julius Roy Bennett was born on April 17, 1940 in Weleetka, Oklahoma – the son of sharecroppers. His proud parents, Roy and Elue Bennett, were of modest means and limited education, but instilled in him at an early age the values of hard work and a commitment to excellence. His days out in the country were full of mischief and adventure, as well as misadventure. When Julius was ten years of age, his family moved to the Kansas City area, after his father’s occupation as a farmer became unsustainable. In December, 1956, his family moved again, this time to San Diego where his father pursued work in the construction industry. His father encouraged Julius to pursue an education so that he would not have to live by the sweat of his brow.

In 1958, Julius graduated from San Diego High School, and, within the next few years, commenced a four-year stint in the Air Force. Upon his return to civilian life, he managed to become the proud owner of a white 1958 Pontiac Bonneville which he liked to show off.

Following his father’s advice, Julius matriculated at San Diego State University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Subsequently, Julius obtained employment with the City of San Diego where he served first as a park ranger and guide in Old Town, and ultimately embarked on a remarkable career as Public Information Supervisor for the City’s Citizens’ Assistance Program, where he served with distinction for many years. His professional life was marked by integrity and an impeccable work ethic, earning him the respect of his colleagues and the community.

By the time he retired from the City of San Diego, his life had turned in a different direction as he had answered a higher call to become the Senior Pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in San Diego. Prior to accepting this call, he had been ordained as a minister, and had served as an Assistant Pastor at Macedonia, under the guidance and mentorship of his uncle, the late Revered H.V. Bennett. His ministry was not confined to the walls of the church; it was lived out daily through acts of kindness, counsel, and an unwavering commitment to spreading the word of God. Julius’s sermons were not just heard; they were felt, as he imparted wisdom that resonated deeply with all who were blessed to listen. Julius served tirelessly and faithfully in this capacity from 1991 to 2023. During his pastoral tenure, he was able to serve as a mentor to his nephew, the Reverend Vernon Bennett, Jr.

Those who knew Julius would describe him as loving, wise, and selfless – a man whose life was a testament to the power of faith in action. He found joy in serving others and in the simple pleasures of fellowship and family. He lived out the gospel through every aspect of his life.

As we remember Julius, we reflect on the words of the Apostle Paul, which he often quoted: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7). Julius indeed fought the good fight, and his race was one of enduring love and generosity.

In a world that so often seeks complicated answers, Julius reminded us of the profound truth found in simplicity. As Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Julius embodied this sentiment, teaching us that the greatest impact often comes from the smallest acts done with the greatest love.

Julius Roy Bennett’s life was a sermon of its own—a message of hope, a life lived in service, and an example of Christ’s love in action. As we bid farewell to this earthly shepherd, we rejoice in the knowledge that he now resides in the glory of the Lord, continuing to watch over us with that same loving gaze we have all come to know.

Let us honor Julius’s memory by living out the values he cherished: love, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to our faith. His spirit will continue to guide us, his wisdom will remain in our hearts, and his love will forever be a part of the fabric of our lives. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant; your legacy endures.

Julius’s journey through life was marked by an unshakable faith and a boundless capacity for selflessness that touched the hearts of everyone he encountered. He passed away in Chula Vista, California, leaving behind a legacy of love and service that will forever be cherished.

Julius’s life was one of dedication to his family, his community, and his Lord. He was preceded in death by: his father and mother Roy and Elue Bennett; his wife Ethel Bennett; and his elder brother Vernon Sr. and sister-in-law Elaine Bennett. Julius leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Yvonne; his loving brothers, Maurice A. Bennett (and Pierrette), and Judge Wilbert E. Bennett (and Ola); his nephews Vernon (and Regina), Vincent (and Christina), and Nathan; his nieces Lucinda, Vanessa, and Nathalie; his great-nephews Jeremiah and Julian, and great-nieces Michelle, Talia, and Imani; his great-great-nephew Zaire; his step-son Derrick; and a host of cousins and friends, as well as his brothers and sons in the ministry.
