- May 15, 2025

Rev. Gene W. Smith, 85 years old, and a two-year resident of Perkasie, PA, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 14, 2025. He resided with his wife, Sara, and daughter and son-in-law in Perkasie, PA, until the day of his death. Gene was the husband of Sara (Miller) for 64 years at the time of his passing. He was born in Topton, PA, January 18, 1940, to the late George and Eva Smith.
Rev. Smith graduated from Brandywine Heights High School in 1957. He enjoyed playing baseball and soccer and received several trophies as a valuable player in baseball and fastpitch softball.
Rev. Smith accepted Jesus as his Savior and Lord on May 25, 1973, in a glorious entrance into the family of God. His life changed in a vibrant way from being a drunkard and alcoholic into a loving walk with his Savior.
Gene received a bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Ministries from Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1977. He later received a master’s degree in sacred literature in 1981. In 1983, he received a Master of Divinity Degree from Trinity Theological Seminary in Southern Illinois.
His ministry took him to several states over a period of years, pastoring churches and conducting week-long tent revival meetings through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maine.
In 1991, God brought Rev. Smith back to Pennsylvania to pastor a struggling church in Catasauqua, PA. A year later the church moved to Whitehall, PA. He retired from the church in 2007 after a struggle with cancer.
Rev. Smith was an accomplished piano player. He ministered in song to several nursing homes in the area. He played all the old songs from the 1920s through the 1970s. His longest time at anyone nursing home was at Fellowship Community nursing home for 20 years.
While at Whitehall, God led Rev. Smith and his wife to 12 foreign countries where they had many opportunities to share their testimony as to what God can do with a committed life of service. In 2014, the Whitehall church extended a call to him to consider being the assistant pastor of Visitation under the ministry of Rev. Doctor Timothy Schmoyer. He accepted and served for another eight years, until 2022.
Gene is survived by his wife, Sara, a daughter, Michele Heath and husband Jim, and a son, Mark Smith and wife Melissa, 8 grandchildren, one nephew, 3 great grandchildren, and a brother Leon Smith and wife Diane.
His viewing will be held from 9-11am Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Whitehall Bible Fellowship Church, 3300 7th St, Hokendauqua, PA 18052. Funeral services will be held at 11am Tuesday, at the church.
