Raul Vasquez, age 80, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Mission Hospital – McDowell.
Born September 19, 1944, in Mexico, Raul was the son of the late Jose Guadalupe Vasquez and Victoria Calderas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sherry Edwards Mejia; his second wife, Maria Francisca Santillan; and his sister, Consuelo “Chelo” Falcon.
Raul lived a life full of hard work, laughter, and unforgettable style. He dedicated 41 years to Ray-Pak before retiring, and during those years he built not only a career but a reputation for loyalty and perseverance. A faithful member of St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church in Newbury Park, California, Raul carried his strong faith with him when he moved to Marion in 2007 after many years in Newburry Park, CA area.
Raul was a lifelong San Francisco 49ers fan, especially admiring Joe Montana, and he loved attending classic oldies car shows. He was also a fan of actor Danny Trejo, whose strength and personality he admired. Raul was affectionately known as “Papa” to his family and friends—he was the best “Papa” anyone could ask for. His presence was larger than life, his laugh unforgettable, and his love unconditional.
To him, family was everything, and he poured his heart into being present for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His salsa verde and guacamole were legendary, with everyone still chasing the secrets of his recipes. And his signature look—fedora, sunglasses, and Stacy Adams shoes—was more than just style; it was his personality, as he always said.
Those left to cherish his memory include his ten children: Raul “Butch” Vasquez Jr.; Carmela Vasquez (Ralph); Frank Vasquez; Ruben Vasquez (Pilar); Violet Lavender (Richard); Jasmin Vasquez; Dahlia Penland (Jonathan); Edward Vasquez; Patty Garcia; and Gina Garcia. He is also survived by three siblings: Concepcion Acatitla-Vasquez, Terri Edwards, and Jessica Urbina; along with thirty grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren, who will forever remember him as their cherished Papa.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home, with Pastors Keith Jamison and Drew Dalton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior, from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
“Te amamos siempre, Papá. Siempre en nuestros corazones.”
