Phil Hensley

Phil Louis “Pops” Hensley, age 80, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Phil’s life was marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family and community.

Born on July 21, 1944, in Dillingham, North Carolina, Phil was raised with strong values that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from Erwin High School and later attended Haywood Community College. These early years laid the foundation for a life defined by hard work and integrity.

Phil proudly served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1965. During his time in the Navy, he played outfield on the Navy baseball team—a testament to his lifelong love of the sport. His military service instilled in him a sense of discipline and pride that he carried into every aspect of his life.

In 1972, Phil married Mary Ann Ward, beginning a loving partnership that would span more than five decades. Together they raised three children: Kristie Lynn Hensley; Phil Louis Hensley II; and Bryan Mark Hensley. Phil’s pride in his family was evident to all who knew him. He especially cherished his role as “Pops” to his two grandsons, Bryan Mark Hensley II and Brayden Abram Hensley—his pride and joy.

Phil had long and fulfilling career as an Electrician Technician at Carolina Village. From 1978 until his retirement in 2014, he was a valued member of the team—respected for his technical skill, reliability, and unwavering commitment to doing the job right. Residents knew they could count on him not only for his expertise but also for his good humor and generous spirit.

Phil’s passions extended well beyond his professional life. A devoted Atlanta Braves fan, he never missed a game—often watching from his garage with unwavering enthusiasm. He celebrated their World Series victory with joy that only a true lifelong fan could know. He was also a proud supporter of the Carolina Tar Heels and followed their games with equal fervor.

Baseball wasn’t just something Phil watched—it was something he lived. When his sons were old enough to play, he coached their teams with dedication and heart. His presence at the ball field became a fixture in their lives and those of many young players who benefited from his guidance.

Fishing was another cherished pastime. Some of Phil’s fondest memories were made alongside his daughter Kristie—her perched on his shoulders as they searched for the perfect fishing spot. That tradition continued with his sons over the years, especially on opening day when Phil would joke that they might need to bring along “their own rock to stand on,” ensuring he had just the right vantage point.

Phil was also known for his green thumb; each summer, his garden overflowed with vegetables and fruits that he tended with care and pride. Whether it was fixing something broken or sharing one of his many jokes, Phil had a knack for making things better—bringing laughter and comfort wherever he went.

Above all else, Phil was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann Ward Hensley of Hendersonville, NC; children Kristie Lynn Hensley of Hendersonville, NC; Phil Louis Hensley II of Hendersonville, NC; Bryan Mark Hensley and wife Cherie of Hendersonville, NC; grandchildren Bryan Mark Hensley II and Brayden Abram Hensley; sister Ida “Gail” Hensley Morrow of Asheville, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Boyd McKinley Hensley; mother Maggie Hensley Sealey; stepfather Leonard Sealey; brothers Jerry McKinley Hensley and Wade Ervin Hensley; and sister Faye Etta Hensley Ramsey.

Phil’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched—with every game coached, every wire carefully connected at work, every fish reeled in beside loved ones. His memory will continue to bring comfort to those who knew him best.
