Petrin Gillander

Petrin Gillander, 70, of Ava, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 23, 2025. She was born in Rome on September 5, 1954, a daughter of the late Peter and Assunta (Tarantino) Carissimo. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and went to Nursing School to become a Registered Nurse. On June 20, 1975, she was united in marriage to Thomas Gillander, a blessed union of 50 years.

Petrin was an RN in the Maternity Ward at Rome Hospital for over 20 years before transferring to the Walsh Unit at Mohawk Correctional Facility.

Petrin loved to be active and enjoyed, walking, hiking and swimming. She and her husband Tom traveled to all over the United States, Caribbean and Europe. She and Tom had just returned from a wonderful trip with their whole family to Disney World.

Surviving besides her loving husband, Tom, are three sons, Peter Gillander (Megan), Brian Gillander (Beth), and Chad Gillander (Emily); two brothers, Frank Carissimo (Mary) and Leonard Carissimo; a sister, Susan Earl;  five cherished grandchildren, Alyeska, Dean, Audrey, Hugh, and Eleonora; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will  be held on Friday, June 27th, at 11:00 a.m.  at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome NY 13440. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday at St. Peter’s Church prior to the Mass from 10-11:00 a.m.  Interment will take place in Rome Cemetery.
