Peggy Chapman

Peggy was born on April 19,1937 in the small community of Midway to Robert Mills and Alice Walls Mills. Peggy was the third of nine children and grew up working the fields. She was born in hard times and knew how to live off the land. She would often laugh and say, “I really am a Pioneer Woman”.

Peggy loved telling stories about her childhood and how she spent many days working the plow and distributor, driving her daddy’s double clutch truck, and helping her mom wash clothes on an old washboard. Being the first daughter, she would always say, “My daddy treated me like I was a boy”, and that was apparent in her toughness and strong work ethic which carried on in everything she did. Even in her eighties, she could outwork any one of us.

Peggy graduated from Queen City High School in 1955 and started her family soon after. She was a firm but loving momma who believed in tough love and accountability. All of her children have heard her say, “Your momma may make you mad, but she will never steer you wrong.” Peggy worked at Allday’s Department Store and Ellington Clinic before becoming a permanent homemaker where she spent most of her days doing woodwork in her shop or crafting at her table. For those who knew Peggy, knew she had a sense for fashion and a love for jewelry. In fact, she made most of the jewelry she wore and would laugh and say, “I have more jewelry than I can look after.” Along with jewelry making, she also loved mowing her yard, growing tomatoes and peppers, feeding her hummingbirds, and hunting for special, one of a kind antiques. Peggy enjoyed cooking and feeding her family. Her greatest wish was to have her family all under one roof, eating, and talking together.

Peggy is loved and survived by a large and loving family. Her children, Chuck and Kim Partain of Sour Lake, Ricky and Jan Partain of Silsbee, and Pam and Jeff Purtle of Queen City; brothers, Rex Mills, Eddie Mills; sisters, Judy Turner, Geniece Driskell; numerous loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren whom she adored and loved deeply; and a host of family and friends.

Peggy is proceeded in death by her parents, the father of her children, Waylon Partain, daughter, Missy Partain Taylor, brother, Bobby Mills; sisters, Linda Griffin, Patsy Watkins, Barbara Mills; and her husband, Bob Chapman.

Visitation will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Hanner Funeral Service.. Graveside services will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, September 21, 2025, under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service, at Laws Chapel Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, and honorary pallbearers will be her great grandsons.
