Nelson Arias

Nelson Apolinar Arias, 65, passed away peacefully at his home in San Diego, California on July 11, 2024 after a battle with cancer, glioblastoma. Born on September 21, 1958, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Nelson lived a life full of dedication, service, and kindness.

Nelson graduated from George Washington High School in Manhattan, New York, before joining the US Navy in 1977. His distinguished military career saw him serve as one of the last crew members before the decommissioning of the USS Turner Joy, where while underway in the South Pacific, his first son was born in 1980. Later assignments at Naval Station Long Beach. Soon after, he continued his service at Naval Base San Diego, joining the commissioning crew of the USS Lewis B. Puller FFG-23, and completed two West Pac deployments.

In 1989, Nelson was stationed at Naval Station North Island, where his second son was born in San Diego, CA. He subsequently served on the USS Peleliu LH-5 and was assigned to Naval Special Warfare Group 1, Special Boat Unit 13 at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado before retiring from the Navy. After his military career, Nelson continued his dedication to public service with the Department of Justice, Bureau of Federal Prisons until his retirement as a Federal Government Civilian.

Beyond his professional achievements, Nelson was a man of many talents and deep compassion. He was a master electrician and pursued numerous courses to master refrigeration, landscaping, gardening, home repair, and vehicle repair. His relentless drive to learn and fix things was matched only by his generosity in sharing his skills and helping others.

Nelson’s commitment to fitness and health was inspiring. He was a constant presence along the bay in San Diego when riding his bicycle, and you could often find him weightlifting at the gym or jogging. His dedication motivated those around him.

Nelson was also actively involved in his community and family helping family and neighbors with various projects—which would be one “loooong” list. The drive to help others and his talent is inspiring to many of us to this day. He also had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time gardening, which brought him peace and joy.

Nelson is survived by his beloved spouse Joy, his four adult children, and ten grandchildren from his second marriage. From his first marriage, he is survived by his ex-spouse Carmen, two children, and two grandchildren. Also, one brother Andres and two sisters, Ana and Alta. Nelson’s legacy of kindness, knowledge, and service will continue to live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.

A memorial service to honor Nelson’s life will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers and medical staff who provided support and comfort during Nelson’s final days.
