With immeasurable sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Elwin Gray on May 28, 2025, at the age of 72, following complications from kidney and heart failure. Mike was the beloved patriarch of our family, our favorite person in the world, and his absence leaves an unfillable void in our hearts.
Born on June 24, 1952 in Almont Michigan and was raised in Imlay City, Michigan. Mike’s strong work ethic took root early on the family farm, where he began milking cows at a very young age. In the early years of his marriage, he worked at the planetarium in Imlay City and delighted in writing about the stars for the local newspaper. He later began working at the Imlay City Post Office. Mike moved his family to Arizona, where he transferred to the Tempe Post Office and continued his career with the USPS until retirement.
Mike’s boundless curiosity and enthusiasm for life shaped every moment he spent with loved ones. He taught his children, from a young age, the strategic intricacies of chess, nurturing a lifelong love of learning. Sundays were cherished, filled with reading encyclopedias, watching classic science fiction like Doctor Who and Star Trek, exploring libraries, and heading out for runs or bike rides.
His eyes were often turned toward the stars. A passionate astronomer and lifelong student of the cosmos, Mike found endless wonder in the mysteries of outer space. His fascination with the universe naturally flowed into his love of science fiction, from the voyages of the Starship Enterprise to the countless worlds he discovered in his beloved books and comics. Mike’s intellectual curiosity extended to deep philosophical and science-based conversations with family and friends, a testament to his thoughtful and engaging nature. Many of his happiest moments were spent at the movies with his grandchildren or his dear friend Bill sharing stories, laughter, and the magic of cinema while enjoying popcorn, chocolate, or peanut M&Ms.
He carried this playful spirit into grandparenthood, delighting in pushing swings, climbing monkey bars, and joining in games with his cherished grandchildren. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: taking walks, savoring hamburgers and shrimp tacos, and embracing life with childlike enthusiasm. A dedicated Powerball player, he used the same family birthday numbers for as long as anyone could remember.
Mike’s devoted wife of 51 years, Lynn, is utterly heartbroken. Their life together was a beautiful tapestry of shared experiences—meals at favorite restaurants, strolling hand-in-hand while hunting Pokémon, and always searching for the best deals. When Lynn worked as a traveling nurse, Mike was always by her side. Most of their wedding anniversaries were spent in Las Vegas, playing Keno and enjoying the buffets. Their enduring love and companionship remain an inspiration.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Lynn Gray; his children Andrea Morgan (Dan), Stewart Gray (Kristen), Matthew Gray, and Brandon Gray (Deborah); his cherished grandchildren Trinity Morgan, Julian Gray, Logan Gray, and Lexi Gray; and his sisters Cheryl Gray, Leta Gray, and Katie Sabb (George). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Susie Rambo (Roger), Paul Budnick (Deborah), Karen Shottwell (Steve), John Budnick, Diane Manning, Antoinette Windhurst, and Timothy Budnick (Valarie), along with 41 nieces and nephews from both sides of the family and dozens of great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arnie and Joyce Gray; his brother Pat Gray; his brother-in-law August Budnick; his parents-in-law Antoinette and Howard Budnick; and his brother-in-law David Windhurst.
His warmth, humor, and ability to find magic in the fantastical world and the real one will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
