Mercedes Ostby

Mercedes ‘Mercy’ Ruth Ostby, 89, died Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Renton WA. Mercy was born October 24, 1935, to Carl and Lillian (Meyer) Ostby. She grew up in Douglas ND and graduated from Douglas High School. Mercy continued her education at Minot State Teacher’s College and taught at a country school. She later relocated to Auburn WA and taught journalism until retiring. Her surviving family includes sister AlJean (Will) Brule, Magnolia, TX, brothers, Roger Ostby, Minot, ND and Rodney Ostby, Rolla, ND; sisters in law, Helen Ostby, Dickinson, ND and Kay Ostby, Douglas, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews. Mercy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Robert Ostby, Richard Ostby, Ronald Ostby, and Duane Ostby; sisters, Yvonne Stack, Lorraine Johnson, Aretha Quinn and Arline Tortelli. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. PSDT Wednesday, May 28th at Marlatt’s Funeral Home, 713 Central Ave N, Kent, WA 98032. Interment will be in Douglas City Cemetery, ND at a later date.
