Mercedes Cruz

Mercedes “Merce” Cruz, a cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 25, 1935, in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Luis and Angelina Garcia and the devoted wife of the late Julio Cruz Sr.

Mercedes dedicated her life to her family, embracing her role as the heart and soul of the household. Her warmth, compassion, and unwavering love shaped generations. Known for her strong will and nurturing spirit, she was a pillar of strength—offering comfort, guidance, and boundless care to all who knew her.

She is survived by her children: Julio Cruz Jr. and his wife Adrianna, Wilfredo Cruz and his wife Leidiana, Luis Cruz and his wife Jennifer, and Mayra Cruz-Garcia. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Lisa, Julianna, Jonathan, Isabel, Nicholas, Alvaro Jr., Aleena, Matthew, Alejandra, Diana, Jasmine, and EJ. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren: Adrianna, Alianna, Theo, Victoria, Sofia, Carmelo, Ezra, Elias, Saidie, Sean, and Tristen—each one blessed by her enduring love and gentle guidance.

Mercedes is also survived by her siblings: Jorge, Carmelo, Jose, and Juan Garcia; her sisters Rosa and Angelina Garcia; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

For many years, Mercedes worked as a seamstress at American Fabrics in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where her dedication and skill were widely admired. In her free time, she enjoyed the outdoors, trips to the casino, sewing, cooking, and most of all, hosting her treasured Sunday family dinner gatherings filled with laughter, love, and her signature dishes.

Mercedes will be remembered for her resilience, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, and she will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
