Maurice J. “Knobby” Flynn, age 87, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully in his home on September 27, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born January 14, 1938 to Thomas and Martha Flynn, Maurice had the classic Irish Catholic upbringing, with 13 siblings and even more extended family joining the Flynns in their home. Family was one of his greatest joys in life, and he went on to raise three children with his beloved wife, Edna (nee Anderson). In his later years, he happily answered to every imaginable variation of “grandpa”.
Maurice proudly served in the United States Air Force, and continued his commitment to his country by serving as a member of our National Guard. He then went on to enjoy a 46-year career with The Pennsylvania Railroad. Despite multiple mergers and acquisitions over the decades, he remained committed to ensuring that everyone had what they needed to get the job done. He was the “go-to man” in every sense of the word, and stories were still being shared about him long after his departure.
A devout Catholic through and through, Maurice was a dedicated parishioner of St. Anselm Catholic Church and a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He lived his faith daily, drawing great comfort and inspiration from watching EWTN and gifting rosaries to those in need.
Beyond his work, his faith, and his family, Maurice loved cheering on his favorite sports teams, especially the Phillies and Eagles. He was also a Mummer and took great joy in keeping a Philadelphia tradition going.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, his 13 siblings, and his beloved wife, Edna.
He is survived by his children: Teresa (Charles) Schwartz, Robert (Chris) Flynn, and Barbara (Neal) Hafner. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Danielle (Shawn), Charles (Mary), Connor (fiancée Emily), and Amanda, as well as his great-grandchildren: Logan, Timothy, Margot, Charles, and Charlotte. He will also be dearly missed by his faithful companion and birthday twin, his dog Branch.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Maurice’s Life Celebration on Friday, October 3, 2025, at St. Anselm Church located at 12670 Dunks Ferry Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19154. A viewing will be held in church from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Military Honors and burial to immediately follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Maurice’s honor may be made to Rugged Rosaries, a veterans-focused organization that crafts unique, handmade rosaries in support of our troops. Donations may be mailed courtesy of:
