Matilda L. “Tillie” Durgan, 89, of Boonville, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Rome Health. She was born in Turin, NY, on September 21, 1935, a daughter of the late Leonard and Lulu Gibbs. She was a 1953 graduate of General Martin High School in Glenfield, NY. She was united in marriage to Arthur “Don” Durgan in ceremony held in Milford, PA. He passed away October 28, 1995.
Tillie worked at Dunlap Tires in Utica for many years. She loved to play Bingo, watch Perry Mason and the Price is Right, and listen to country music. Tillie looked forward to her weekly shopping trip with her daughter Donna to Walmart which she referred to as “Walmarks”, then lunch at the Iron Kettle. She was known for hosting many Friendly Home Parties for family and friends for several years.
Tillie is survived by her nine children, Jeff Durgan, Clay Durgan (Charlene), Doris Schaeffer (Rob), Donna Durgan (Steve), Donald Durgan (Jeanne), Ruth Durgan (John), Lonnie Durgan, Rodney Durgan (Melissa), and Lynn Szczesniak (Michael); seventeen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren including her special little man, Jace; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
Tillie’s family would like to thank Amcare Ambulance and EMT’s Jake Mayo and Joe Kieffer; Rome Health ER nurses Brenda, Brooke, and Tillie’s granddaughter, Mandy; Rome Health ICU nurses Kesley and Jen; and Drs. Overton and Yi for all of their wonderful care and compassion.
Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome NY 13440, on Thursday from 12-2:00 p.m. with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
