Mathew Philipps

Mathew E Philipps, 70 of San Diego California, formerly of Wallace, MI passed away June 17th at the LaJolla VA hospital, after a battle with cancer.

Matt was born March 25,1955 in Menominee, MI the son of the late Duane and Lenore (Salewsky) Philipps, as a youth he attended Mellen Schools, and later graduated from Stephenson High School with the class of 1973. After school he first worked at Scott Paper in Marinette and then he enlisted with 3 other local men in the United States Marine Corps. He served a 4-year tour both in and out of the US, after his discharge from service he settled in California where he worked in construction and warehousing. In 2022 he was able to return home for a year to spend time with his family and spent one last deer season at camp with family, before returning to California.

Matt is survived by a son Patrick, 2 daughters Michelle and Phyllis, 4 sisters Linda (Steve) Crossman of Menominee, Susan (Bob) Gearhart of Powers, Laurie of Wallace, Mary (Wayne) Mills of Marinette. 5 brothers, Duane (Carol) of Deerbrook, WI, Timothy (Jean), Mark (Bonnie), Tom (Holly), and Chris all of Wallace, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Besides his parents and grandparents, Matt was proceeded in death by 2 brothers, Daniel and David, brother-in-law Carl Theurkauf,Jr., niece Tammy Philipps, and nephew Daniel Theurkauf.

The family will hold a celebration of Matt’s life, July 6 from 1-4 pm at the Mellen Township Park. Burial will be in the Mellen Twp Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers his family requests that donations can be made to the American Legion Post 43 of Stephenson, MI in Matt’s name.
