In Loving Memory of Mary Elizabeth Gifford

October 8, 1952 – April 20, 2025

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Mary Elizabeth Gifford—a devoted mother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, godmother, friend, and kind and nurturing spirit. She left us on April 20, 2025, Easter Sunday, at the age of 72, surrounded by love and light.

Born in Troy, NY, Mary poured her heart into raising her daughter, Amelia, and caring deeply for the people, animals, and places she loved. A passionate gardener, animal lover, and gifted baker, she brought comfort to many through simple joys—especially her unforgettable apple pie. Mary had a gift for making life grow—whether in her garden, her kitchen, or the lives of those she loved. With grace and warmth, she connected with and touched the hearts of those around her, even strangers, through her kindness and gentle presence.

She shared a deep bond with her sister, Theresa C. Gifford, and her late brother, Leslie P. Gifford III—relationships grounded in love and unwavering support.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Florence Evelyn Lutz and Leslie Paul Gifford Jr., and her brother, Leslie P. Gifford III.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Amelia Elizabeth Gifford; her sister, Rev. Theresa Coors Gifford; her niece, Amy and her husband Carcel DuBose and their children, Kiana and Damaris; her nephew and godson, Leslie Paul Gifford IV and his wife Abigail, and their daughter Matilda; her niece, Gretta Dahl Hansing and her husband Nathan; her niece and goddaughter Lilly Jean Hansing; and her niece, Janine Lister Hansing and her fur babies, and her life long friend Aileen Hemstreet Durrant.

Her legacy lives on in every blooming garden, every shared recipe, and every small act of compassion.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, April 24, from 10 AM to 12 PM at Chase-Smith Funeral Home in Schaghticoke, NY, followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery in Schaghticoke, NY. All are invited to attend the graveside service and stay afterword for a casual picnic-style gathering at the cemetery grounds—a time to share stories, memories, and the warmth of Mary’s spirit together. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mohawk Humane Society.

Forever loved, deeply missed.
