1953 – 2025
Mark James Petersen, 71. passed away peacefully at his home in Concord, CA on February 19, 2025.
Mark was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 11, 1953 to Eugene J. and Willa H. (Weinberg) Petersen. His father was a career Army Non-Commissioned Officer And Mark grew up living at Army bases and locations in Austria, Germany and the United States. He has lived in Salzburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Muenchweiler, and Wurzburg, plus many locations in the US. He graduated from High School in Leesville, Louisiana in 1971, and attended Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA for a year before enlisting in the Army in 1973. He served almost 7 years, and was stationed at Ft. Ord, CA; Ft. Sam Houston TX; and Augsburg, Germany. He attained the rank of Specialist 6 (E-6) and was trained to be an Army Medical Specialist working as a licensed practical nurse assigned to the Institute of Surgical Research (Ft. Sam Houston) and the US Army Hospital Augsburg, Germany. After leaving the Army he made a career in the US Postal Service and retired after 40 years, working mostly in the bulk mail distribution center in San Francisco.
Mark was preceded in death by his Mother Willa Petersen of Vacaville, CA, and his older brother John Petersen of Hartland, WI. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sheryl (Smith) Petersen and their two children, Jessica (Blaine) Garner, of Vancouver, WA, and Travis Petersen of Concord, CA. He has seven Grandchildren from Jessica and Blaine: Hyrum, Brady, Angus, Abigail and Zion Garner and Alexandra and Dominic Walsh. He is also survived by his father Sergeant Major (ret) Eugene Petersen, aged 102 years of Vacaville, CA; a sister Linda (Bill) Standage of Puyallup, WA and their four daughters, Julie, Cristy, Jennifer and Kelly; a brother Richard (Dana) Petersen of Valencia, CA and their two daughters, Morgan and Faith Petersen. A Sister-in-law Lori Petersen (John) and their two children Jana (Joe) Pingel and Steven (Megan) Petersen reside in Wisconsin along with numerous great-nieces and nephews.

BURIAL WITH MILITARY HONORS: at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, near Vacaville, CA 12:30-1:00 PM
