Mario Canedo

Mario Aguilar Cañedo, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in San Diego, CA. Born on December 23, 1941, in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Mario’s life was a testament to perseverance, sacrifice, and devotion to family and country. He was 83 years old.

Mario immigrated to the United States as a child with his mother, settling in southern California, where he learned English and laid the foundation for a remarkable life. His journey took him from humble beginnings to a distinguished 30-year career in the United States Navy, where he served with honor on numerous ships including the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Dubuque during the Vietnam War and other global conflicts. Mario rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer earning numerous awards and accolades in recognition of his bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment. After retiring from the Navy, Mario dedicated seventeen (17) years to the San Diego Gas and Electric power plant, contributing to the community he called home.

Married to his beloved wife, Licha, for 61 years, their enduring partnership was a cornerstone of a life filled with love, laughter, and shared memories. Mario was known for his sharp wit and the way he gave people a hard time—not out of spite, but as his way to challenge and toughen the ones he loved. He believed in strength, hard work, and living with purpose. His greatest joy was being in the presence of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—seeing the love and legacy he and Licha cultivated over a lifetime.

An avid photographer, he found joy in capturing life’s everyday moments and meticulously collected and restored vintage cameras. He was always reading, always learning—especially about health and wellness—and enjoyed sharing tips and discoveries with those around him.

He was preceded in death by his mother Hermelinda Aguilar, father Pedro Cañedo and two half-brothers. He is survived by his wife Licha, son Mario (Patty) Cañedo; daughters Selma (Tom) McKinney; Laura (Drew) Hogan; eight (8) grandchildren, six (6) great-grandchildren and his half-sister, all who will carry his love and lessons forward.

Memorial and burial services will be held at Miramar National Cemetery 5795 Nobel Dr. San Diego, CA 92122 on June 24, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please honor Mario’s memory by sharing a cherished story or lesson he taught you with someone you love.
