Maria Albanese Haynes, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2025 at Brightly Senior Living in Glen Carbon, IL, leaving behind a legacy of faith, passion, and selflessness. Born in the picturesque town of Locati, Sicily, Maria’s journey led her to an abundant life filled with joy, service, and family.
On February 13, 1954, Maria united in marriage with the love of her life, Louis W. Haynes, a bond that flourished until Louis’s passing on December 30, 1998. Maria’s devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, Sebastian and Calogera Albanese, her son Ronald L. Haynes, and her brothers Salvatore and Peter Albanese, her vibrant spirit lives on through her surviving family.
Maria’s legacy is carried forward by her children, Mark Haynes of Collinsville, IL, and Marcia (Dennis) Bohle of Maryville, IL. Her eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Megan) Haynes, Ryan Haynes, Aimee Haynes, Erik (Kacee) Bohle, Kyle Bohle, Adam Bohle, Jennifer (Emil) Boguszewski, and Stephen Haynes, as well as her four great-grandchildren, Matthew Haynes, Hudson Bohle, Della Bohle, and Elaina Boguszewski, will forever cherish the memories and lessons imparted by their beloved matriarch. Her family circle extends to her cousins Salvatore Albanese of Palermo, Sicily, and Calogera “Lily” Albanese of Bari, Italy, along with several adoring nieces and nephews.
Maria’s educational achievements were a source of pride, having arrived in the United States at the age of 15 and not knowing any English and having graduated from Ursuline Academy and Brown’s Business College. Her professional life was marked by a remarkable 36-year tenure as an Administrative Staff Manager for the American Heart Association, where she made lasting contributions and formed enduring friendships.
A devout Catholic, Maria’s faith was the guiding light of her existence, shining through her continuous acts of kindness and community involvement. She dedicated countless hours volunteering at the Brinkerhoff Mansion, St. John’s Hospital, and the Springfield Senior Center. As a member of the St. Louise de Marillac Guild and the Red Hat Society, she found fellowship and purpose.
Maria’s interests were a reflection of her vibrant Sicilian heritage and her zest for life. She was renowned for her Sicilian cooking, an art she performed with love and skill. Her garden was a testament to her nurturing nature, and her sewing echoed the meticulous care she put into every aspect of her life. Maria cherished her time playing dominos, a simple pleasure that brought her immense joy. Her grace and rhythm never failed to light up the dance floor at supper clubs, where she and Louis danced the night away.
Having arrived to the United States on December 3, 1948, Maria embraced her new home with open arms while maintaining the cultural ties that were so dear to her. She was the embodiment of faith-filled living, her selflessness knew no bounds, and her passion for life was infectious.
Maria Albanese Haynes’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, dedication, and service. She was a guiding star in the lives of many, and her memory will be treasured forever as a symbol of warmth, generosity, and unwavering faith. Her journey on earth may have concluded, but the story of her spirit continues to inspire and comfort those she loved.
