Margaret

Margaret (Vicky) Vastano Mullen passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Denver, Colorado, with her daughters, Molly and Shelly by her side. She was 84 years old.

Vicky was born to John and Margaret (Peggy) Vastano in Lima, Ohio, on January 12, 1941. She is survived by two daughters; Molly McKanna (Michael) of Denver, and Shelly Chamberlain (Scott) of Austin, TX; three siblings, Mary Jane (Vastano) Kennedy, John Vastano, and James Vastano of Lima, OH; one brother-in-law, Jack Mullen of Broken Arrow, OK; and five beloved grandchildren, Meredith McKanna, Kevin McKanna, Emily (Chamberlain) Freimer, Andrew McKanna, and Lauren Chamberlain. Her husband of 55 years, Thomas J. Mullen, preceded her in death in 2017.

A 1958 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School, Vicky was a vibrant, fun-loving friend with an unforgettable bright smile. In 1960, the trajectory of her life changed when she became a copy girl at The Lima News. She met an intelligent, kind, and ambitious cub reporter named Tom who captured her heart.

Vicky and Tom married in 1961. They began their family in 1963 with the arrival of their first daughter Molly. They completed their family when Shelly arrived in 1965. As Tom successfully advanced his journalism career, Vicky passionately embraced her treasured role in raising their daughters. She built a full, meaningful life for her family. Her tireless work ethic, resourcefulness, and grit were ever-present. She had high expectations of herself and her family. She cheered her daughter’s accomplishments; encouraged their independence; and demonstrated strong resilience. She had a spirited personality and taught her daughters the value of social connection. Perhaps most defining was how fiercely she stood as their #1 advocate and protector. Without a doubt, this trait lives on in her daughters.

Beginning in 1993 with the birth of their first grandchild, Vicky and Tom embarked on an adventure that brought pure joy to their lives. She embraced being the cool grandma, the fearless leader of every fun activity. Memories of endless card games, summer adventures in Colorado, and beach and Disney vacations retain a special place in our hearts. She forged a unique bond with each grandchild and loved retelling their most mischievous childhood endeavor. One of the greatest gifts she gave her daughters was her unmatched selflessness and unconditional love poured so fully into her grandchildren.

Vicky built many loyal, life-long friendships. Her energetic spirit and sharp wit allowed new friendships to flourish easily. She cherished the shared laughter and unwavering support they gave. We are deeply grateful to the MorningStar senior community for the care, comfort, and warmth they brought to the final chapter of her journey.

A private family remembrance will be held to honor her legacy.
