Kenneth Bevan Hills, a distinguished US Chess Federation (USCF) Master and accomplished digital marketer, passed away on November 13, 2023, at the age of 62 in Danville, California. Born on a US naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, in 1961, he was raised in England from the age of three. Kenneth made a significant impact on the chess community, leaving behind a legacy of sportsmanship and achievements.
Kenneth’s passion for chess was evident throughout his life, with active involvement in Mechanics’ Institute chess club events from the late 1990s to the early 2010s. A highlight of his chess career was winning the 2012 Lovegrove Senior Championship, triumphing over International Master Walter Shipman. He was widely admired and respected for his good sportsmanship, making lasting connections within the chess community.
In addition to his remarkable achievements in chess and digital marketing, Kenneth was known for his brilliant sense of humor that could captivate and make the whole room laugh. Whether engaging in casual conversations, mentoring sessions, or professional meetings, Kenneth had a unique ability to infuse wit and levity into any situation, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.
Beyond the chessboard, Kenneth pursued a diverse range of interests, including golf, poker, bridge, and playing the blues guitar. A devoted soccer fan, he had a special affinity for both Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool. Kenneth’s love for chess was complemented by his extensive knowledge in various fields, earning a BA (Honours) degree in Philosophy from the University of Warwick and an MBA from the Open University.
Transitioning from a career in software engineering, Kenneth later excelled in digital marketing, specializing in Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and becoming an AI-Enabled Funnel Growth Marketer. His expertise in utilizing cutting-edge technology to optimize and scale marketing funnel performance set him apart in the industry.
Colleagues and friends fondly remember Kenneth as a mentor and generous collaborator. His ability to offer guidance and improvement in written work left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working with him. Despite the challenges of distance, Kenneth’s warmth and intellect fostered enduring friendships over the years.
In a testament to his character, a long-time friend shared a poignant recollection of their last meeting in 2018, highlighting Kenneth’s generosity in sharing his experience and expertise. Later, in a professional capacity, Kenneth continued to apply AI tools to advance cutting-edge marketing, leaving a lasting impact on the field.
Kenneth’s sudden illness in early November 2023 took a toll on his health, leading to a temporary hiatus from his professional engagements. Unfortunately, he never returned, leaving friends and colleagues deeply concerned. His absence is mourned by those who cherished his friendship, valued his opinion, and were inspired by his intellect.
Kenneth Hills was more than a chess master and a skilled marketer; he was a cherished life partner to Sheryl, with whom he had plans to get married. Their love was evident to those around them, and he leaves behind a legacy of fond memories and enduring impact. Kenneth’s dedication to chess, his diverse interests, and his contributions to the field of digital marketing will be remembered and celebrated by the communities he touched throughout his remarkable life.
