Kenley Merritt, 79, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, with his beloved wife and children by his side.
Born in 1946, in Greenville, South Carolina, Kenley was the son of the late James Merritt and the late Betty McMann. After graduating high school, he set out at the age of 19 for Manhattan, New York, ready to embrace life’s opportunities. There, he began what would become a distinguished 40-year career with the New York State Department of Corrections. His dedication to service led him to the Hudson Valley, where he made his home in Fishkill, New York, until his retirement in 2000.
Following retirement, Kenley relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, where he embraced a life filled with faith, fellowship, and family. A devoted member and Deacon at Trinity Community Church in Naples, he served with humility and compassion, touching countless lives with his quiet wisdom and generous spirit.
Kenley had a deep love for cars, an enduring fascination with the latest technology, and an unmatched enthusiasm for the sport of boxing. Those who knew him will remember his sharp wit, steadfast values, and the way he lit up every room with his presence.
Kenley is survived by his loving wife, Coquita Macklin Merritt; his children, Christopher E. Merritt, Cory Merritt, Dennis Benitez, Bishme Paulin, Samori Paulin, and Binasia (Jonathan) Bryant; his brother, Jay Merritt and wife Bevera; and his twenty cherished grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Pam Roberts.
Kenley’s life was one of integrity, love, and service — a life that leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the countless memories shared by family and friends, and in the lessons of strength, kindness, and perseverance he imparted.
Though he has left this earthly life, Kenley’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
