Joyce Alberta Shephard, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in her Kansas City, Kansas home on April 21, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on March 18, 1942, in Atchison, Kansas, she was the daughter of Dorothy Hamilton and John James Buckner.

Joyce lived a life grounded in love, service, and strength. Her journey was defined by her deep devotion to her family, her community, and her work. She began her professional career as a skilled seamstress at Brand and Puritz, later continuing at HD Lee, where her dedication and work ethic shone brightly until her retirement. Never one to slow down, Joyce found renewed purpose volunteering as a chef at Grace Center, where she mentored teenage mothers in essential life skills—cooking, cleaning, and personal growth—helping shape them into confident, compassionate adults.

In addition to her roles in the workplace and community, Joyce was a licensed barber, beautician, and an exceptional baker. Her hands worked magic—whether behind a sewing machine, in a kitchen, or while styling hair. Her talents brought joy to all who knew her, and her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched with her generosity and grace.

Joyce’s passion for cooking and baking brought warmth and comfort to every gathering. Her cakes were the centerpiece of family celebrations, and her homemade rolls and holiday dressing were a delicacy. Beyond her culinary gifts, Joyce’s heart was always open—she served as a licensed foster parent for over 15 years, providing love, guidance, and stability to children in need.

A woman of deep faith, Joyce was a devoted member of New Bethel Church. She lovingly brought her grandchildren to Sunday school every week, packing them into her van and ensuring that faith and family remained at the center of their lives.

Above all, Joyce’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her children: Shari Kennedy, Shermaine Currie (Clifford), LaTonya Taylor (Clarance), DeLinda Johnson, Dante Shephard, Desmond Williams (Maryam), and Richard Crawford. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Charlene Kennedy, Leah Cotton, Aretha Scott, Shaunika Cotton, Douglas Kennedy Jr. (Tanari), Joyce Cotton, and Leonard Johnson (Tameeka), and 16 great-grandchildren: Andre, Caleal (Nevaeh), Ken Jr., Patrick Jr., Kendall, Kemani, LaMarion, Keziah, Kairo, Te’za, Aliyah, Cannady, Kaitlynn, Aubree Mae, Christian, and Thalia. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who cherished her dearly.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dorothy Buckner; siblings James Lee and Carol Buckner; her beloved son, Sherman Henry Shephard Jr.; twin great-grandsons, William Henry and Will Sherman Shephard; her niece Dixie Ridgnal; and her best friend and sister in spirit, Sylvia Sims.

Joyce’s passing leaves a profound void, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Momma, we will miss you dearly
