Joyce Charles

Joyce Charles, age 93, of Cardington, passed away early Wednesday morning at Bennington Glen in Marengo.

Born at home in Chesterville, Ohio, on April 18, 1932, Joyce was the daughter of the late Lemoine D. “L.D.” and Annabel (Brown) Rinehart. She graduated from Chesterville High School in the Class of 1950 and remained connected to her roots, serving for many years as Treasurer of the Chesterville Alumni Banquet.

On December 18, 1954, Joyce married the love of her life, Sherman R. Charles, at Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church. They shared 51 years as husband and wife before he preceded her in death on April 28, 2006.

For more than 30 years, Joyce worked in the payroll department at HPM in Mount Gilead. Outside of work, she was a woman of faith, and a longtime member of Harmony United Methodist Church,

Joyce’s kind and caring spirit showed in her love for animals. She had a special heart for stray cats and was always ready to offer them a home. She enjoyed bowling in a league in Fredericktown, and was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers.

A passionate traveler, Joyce visited nearly every state and especially cherished cruises to Bermuda and Alaska. Yet no matter where she went, home on the farm remained her favorite place to be. She was an amazing grandmother and supported her grandsons in all of their endeavors. She also enjoyed babysitting her great grandchildren.

Joyce found comfort in the familiar, owning a succession of Mercury Grand Marquis cars over the years. She was a compassionate, reserved woman that would do anything she could to help others. Late in life, Joyce displayed an ornery, sassy side of herself that she had not shown before.

Left to cherish Joyce’s memory is her grandson, Stephen (Danielle) Charles; great grandchildren: Andy Nemeth, Emma, Peyton and Wrenley Charles; sisters: Sharon Gray, Alice Rogers; sister-in-law, Pat Rinehart; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, John S. Charles; grandson, Robert “Bobby” Charles; sisters: Ruth Pearl, Katherine McCloskey; and brothers: Joe and Grove Rinehart.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate her life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville with Pastor Michael Law officiating.

Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead are honored to have been chosen to serve Joyce’s family. Special memories or condolences may be shared by visiting www.SnyderFuneralHomes.com.
