Mr. Joseph “Joe” Layell, age 86, of Elkin, passed away on Saturday May 10, 2025.
Mr. Layell was born on May 6, 1939 in Wilkes County to the late Alonzo Layell and Viola Cheeks Layell.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons Phillip Layell and Rodney Layell; three brothers Dan Layell, Fred Layell, and Coolidge Layell; and five sisters Shelby Spicer, Azzie Mooney, Beatrice Gaither, LuBeth Carter, and Minnie Nance.
Mr. Layell loved the outdoors especially hunting and was well known for his coon hunting. He was a survivor of many illnesses during his lifetime and was also a very skilled mechanic. Mr. Layell had a heart of gold and would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 69 years, Betty Layell of the home; a daughter Lisa Morrison of Elkin; a sister Judy Evans of Hamptonville; three grandchildren Cody (Deanna) Thompson, Brock (Amber) Thompson, and Brianna (Dax Maniette) Thompson; and great-grandchildren Landon Buchanan, Xavier Thompson, Talia Buchanan, Little Dax Maniette, Joseph Thompson, Jaxon Maniette, and Skyler Thompson.
A funeral service for Mr. Layell will be held on Thursday May 15, 2025 at 2pm at Johnson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in White Rock UMC Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1pm-2pm at the funeral home on Thursday prior to the service.
