John Hynick
Oskaloosa. John Hynick IV (Jr), 103, of rural Mahaska County died Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born on February 5, 1922, in Givin, Iowa, the son of John and Mary Sickle Hynick. He graduated from Eddyville High School with the class of 1939. Following high school, he worked helping his brother Charlie and extended family on their farms. On August 3, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged on February 23, 1946, and earned the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Iowa and enrolled at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and in 1951 earned his BA in education. He taught elementary school for a few years before moving to California. In California he worked at McClellan Air Force Base repairing electronic instruments and equipment. After 23 years there he retired and moved back to Iowa. He purchased a farm now known as the Hynick Family Farm and owned and operated it with his nephew David. He was still part of the farm operation through planting season of this year. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed gardening, Blackjack, hummingbirds and raising bees.
His family includes his son (John) Ted Hynick of Sacramento, California; two grandchildren, Jaclyn (Rudy) Clements and Joseph Hynick; five great grandchildren, Alianna, Rudolph (RJ), Isabella (Izzy), Jordan, and Ben Clements; and many nieces and nephews including David and Traci Hynick.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Ted Hynick; and six sisters, Alberta Holt, Agnes Klahn, Lillian Carpenter, Janet Hankins, Helen Bruce, and Emma Frederick.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 13, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Samuel Beltz officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at Eddyville, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Visitation with the family present will be at the funeral chapel from 11:00 a.m. up to the service time of 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or MHP Hospice Serenity House.
