John Nelson

John S. Nelson, a 84-year-old resident of Elverson, Chester County, Pennsylvania, was born and raised on his family’s farm in Clyde, New York.
A 1963 graduate of Colgate University, Nelson holds a degree in political science. He toured Europe as a member of the Colgate Glee Club. After college, he served his country with the United States Coast Guard, stationed at Governor’s Island in New York City.
One of the original “Mad Men,” John commenced his career in New York City in the early 1960s. He has achieved success as a marketer and entrepreneur, developing marketing campaigns for esteemed companies such as Procter & Gamble, Vicks Chemical Company, Avon Products, Shaklee Products, and American Express. As an entrepreneur, he founded and consulted with numerous start-up companies spanning various industries, including restaurants, beverage mix, and pet product companies.
Recognized for his aptitude in generating innovative ideas, Nelson consistently sought strategies to increase sales, reduce costs, and enhance customer lifetime value.
During the 1960s, he was a member of the Union Club in New York City and a member of the Countrymen’s Club until his passing. Nelson volunteered with SCORE as a retired executive mentor for small businesses. He also volunteered at Longwood Gardens and served as an officer of his homeowners’ association.
Nelson was an avid reader, history enthusiast, and railroad enthusiast, always eager to explore, meet new people, and acquire new knowledge. Notably, he embarked on numerous transcontinental and transatlantic train journeys with his family, including excursions to the Hudson Bay.
Son of Ralph and Alice Nelson, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann, and their son, Jonathan, and his wife, Shih-Chi. John and Mary Ann married in 1968 and resided in New York City, Connecticut, California, and Pennsylvania. They traveled extensively and enjoyed many happy years together.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Church, 110 St. Elizabeth Drive, Chester Springs. Family and friends will be received from 9:45-10:45 AM.
Interment will be private with the family.
