John Carl Myers Mills of Clear Spring, MD passed away on Monday, June 16, 2025 at WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital.
Born in Chambersburg, PA on July 26, 1933, he was the Son of the Late John William Mills and Alma Ruth (Myers) Mills. John was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.
John was a graduate of Clear Spring High School Class of 1951 and a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1953 – 1955 as a Private First Class with Co. K, 148th Infantry, 37th Division, in Fort Riley, KA during the Korean War.
John married Ruth Delores Shank on September 22, 1954 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2024. His career included being a truck driver for Hagerstown Block Company and Grey Concrete Pipe, working in the Foundry at Pangborn Corp., driving for Tri-State Tank Lines and Dewey Jordan, Inc., and a delivery driver for NAPA Auto Parts. He attended Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church in Clear Spring and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Clear Spring.
John was a lifetime member of the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company, serving many years in different capacities including Assistant Chief. He was a member of the Clear Spring American Legion Post 222, and a past member of the Clear Spring Lions Club. John enjoyed helping the neighbors, community, and many friends throughout his lifetime.
John is survived by his loving Wife Ruth Delores (Shank) Mills; a Son John Gregory Mills (Sandra); Granddaughter Amy Adamson (Bud), Grandson Aaron Mills (Emily), Great-Grandchildren Collin Thornton, Duncan John, and Ethan Daniel Adamson; a Sister in Law, Zella Lucille Shank; two Nieces, Pamela Byler (Jim) and Robin Danfelt; and a nephew, Robert Mills (Tammy), and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a Brother William Lee Mills, Sister In Law Wanda Mills, Brother In Law Hillard Shank, Sister In Law Helen Malcolm, and Brother In Law Walter Malcolm.
Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to the many friends and neighbors during this journey, as well as the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company and Clear Spring American Legion Post 222 for their assistance during the funeral.
Services will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD. Brian Eichelberger will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Church Lutheran Cemetery in Clear Spring, MD.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
