John Black

John C. Black, 55, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Stormont Vail Hospital due to complications following surgery.

Born on October 31, 1969, in Junction City, Kansas, John was the son of Anne (Carrington) Black and James Black. He attended Westwood Elementary, Junction City Middle School, and Junction City Senior High School, where he was actively involved in marching band, concert choir, football, basketball, and taekwondo.

Following his graduation, John served in the United States military for a a couple years. His service shaped many of the values he carried with him throughout life.

In his 30s and 40s, John shared his passion for health and fitness by teaching kickboxing and coaching basketball at the Salina YMCA. He later became a Zumba instructor for both the YMCA and Genesis Health Club, performing locally and in other states for charity events and community celebrations. His energy and enthusiasm brought the love of Zumba everywhere he went.

On July 4, 2024, John married Nichole Cooper, and together they blended their families into one loving unit. John’s magnetic personality and fun-loving spirit made him unforgettable. Whether in a room of strangers or longtime friends, he had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcomed and seen.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nichole Cooper; his brothers, Tony Black, Daniel Black, and James Black; his sisters, Annette Black and Amy Showalter; and his children, Anita Brown, Jazman Jones, Brandon LaBarge, and Alexis Black. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Robbie Smith, Elliott Cooper, and Eadrian Cooper; and grandchildren, Doreon Jones, Riko LaBarge, Lily LaBarge, Damireon Dozier, Kalista Cooper, and Kane Smith.

John will be remembered for his kind heart, bright smile, and his ability to bring joy and friendship wherever he went. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
