Joan McComas

Joan Walsh Baker Harrington McComas passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, at the age of 97. She was born on February 15, 1928, to Nelson H. and Margaret W. Baker, and grew up alongside her beloved brother, Nelson H. Jr.

In her early years, Joan attended Catholic school, studied at business school, and worked as a secretary. But her greatest joy came from her role as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She carried her deep faith and strong family values throughout her life, touching every person she loved.

Joan was blessed with two cherished marriages. With her first husband, Robert Carr Harrington (d. 1980), she shared two children, Robert Carr Harrington, Jr. and Deborah Ann (Harrington) Battel.

Later, she found love again with Andrew J. McComas (d. 2013), and embraced his children—Andrew J. McComas Jr., Rev. Gregory C. McComas, and Claire M. (McComas) Mueller—with the same devotion, loving them as her own.

Joan’s pride and joy extended to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She greeted each new addition to the family with excitement, love, and an open heart—always eager to celebrate milestones, and spend quality time in Buffalo and in sunny Florida, always showering them with affection.

Those who knew Joan will remember her warm and welcoming spirit. She loved bringing people together, whether hosting holiday family dinners, or gathering with friends. True to her generous nature, she was always the last one to sit at the table, making sure every dish was warm and every detail just right.

She was most in her element when dancing at a wedding, enjoying a round of golf with dear friends (including her lifelong best friend, Jean Davis), caring for her beautifully kept home, selecting just the right outfit, or sharing long conversations over the phone with her characteristic ease and charm.

Joan was the kind of person everyone could count on—always ready to help, always ready to listen, always ready to bring a smile. Her kindness, joy, and generosity touched countless lives, and her legacy of love will continue to live on in her family and all who knew her.

May she now rest in eternal peace with many loved ones.

A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, October 25th from 2-4 pm at Amigone Funeral Home, (2600 Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, NY 14150). Flowers are appreciated.
