Jean Crane

Jean Drummond Crane, 93, of Princeton, NJ, died peacefully on August 20, 2025, surrounded by her family. Jean was a proud Midwesterner, born in St. Louis, MO, to the late Rachel and Kenneth Drummond. Jean graduated from Mary Institute and attended Bennett College in Millbrook, NY. After marrying Edward (Ted) Crane, Jr. in 1966, she moved to Princeton, where her gift for making friends led to a lifetime of close connections. Her friends appreciated her daily calls full of quick wit and generosity of spirit. Jean was an adventurous traveler, curious reader, and avid bridge player. Still, in the end, her favorite days were spent in the company of friends and family, offering a generous ear to anyone who needed it.

Jean was a lifelong learner, auditing courses at Princeton University and taking a multitude of classes at the Princeton Senior Resource Center. With her keen eye for antiques and collectibles, she became a regional representative for Christie’s auction house and also bought and sold items for both retail and home collections.

In addition, Jean was a dedicated volunteer and generous donor for a variety of organizations supporting families in need. Most dear to her heart was HomeFront, an agency whose mission is to help families transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Jean was a devoted supporter of Planned Parenthood through direct action and was also committed to Grandpals, combining her love of reading and spending time with young children. While serving on the Windrows Welcome Committee, Jean’s natural warmth was evident as she helped introduce countless new residents to the community.

Jean relished her role as the beloved matriarch of a vibrant clan. She leaves behind her loving daughters, Rachel Cantlay, Allison Ijams, and Kitty Ijams. She adored her sons-in-law, David Cantlay, Tom Sargent, and Clement Butt, as well as her stepdaughter Cordelia Crane. Her legacy lives through her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom were lucky to be at the receiving end of her boundless cheerleading and support. She will be remembered for her unwavering optimism and her ability to make anyone feel like the most important person in the room.

In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to HomeFront, 1880 Princeton Avenue, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.

A  celebration of her life will take place at 11 am on Saturday, November 8th at the Nassau Club, 6 Mercer Street, Princeton, NJ.
