James Powell Jr.

James “Jim” B. Powell Jr., 74, of Bethesda, MD, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, with his devoted wife of 50 years, Diane, by his side, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Born in Washington, DC on July 22, 1951, Jim dedicated his life to both his work and his loved ones. A skilled tradesman, he worked at the National Institutes of Health for 43 years and proudly ran his own locksmith business. Jim also served as a volunteer member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 30 years. In addition to his service, he found great joy on the water, fishing, and spending time at the Chesapeake Bay with his family.

Jim was known for his selflessness and big heart—he would drop anything to help a friend or neighbor. His kindness, humor, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Powell; their son, Benjamin Powell, and daughter-in-law, Nicole Powell; his grandchildren, Sofia and Sara Powell; Nicole’s children, Wyatt and Cassidy Blinkhorn; his sister, Margaret Powell; his brother, Bob Powell; and his nieces Kelley Miller and Nicole Fries.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 12:00pm at Lakewood Country Club, 13901 Glen Mill Rd., Rockville, MD 20850. Family and friends are invited to attend and share in the remembrance of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center or to Montgomery Hospice, whose care and support meant so much to his family.  Donations to the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center can be made online at https://lewybodyresourcecenter.org/donate/ or by mailing a check to:  Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center, 750 West Broadway, #2R Long Beach, NY 11561
