Here Fishy, Fishy: Douglas County Kids’ Fishing Derby returns for 32nd year June 7 – 8 at Lampe Park

The Douglas County Kids’ Fishing Derby will return to Lampe Park in Gardnerville for its 32nd year on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 and is open to all children ages 3-12 years old.

Children will be provided everything they need to have a fun and rewarding fishing experience and will be permitted to catch up to two rainbow trout in one of seven 90-minute long sessions.

Each child is given a special gate prize, and additional prizes are awarded for the largest fish caught in each session, for every tagged fish caught throughout the Derby, and for the overall Big Fish Winner of the event.

Although it is FREE to fish the Derby, Pre-Registration is required to receive your session ticket. Space is limited on the creek, so be sure to register early to receive your desired session time.

Registration for the 2025 Kids’ Fishing Derby will end on Friday, June 6th at 4:00PM. To register your child(ren) for the Derby, please visit AJ’s Stoves in Gardnerville – Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or on each remaining Saturday in May from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Meadowdale Center parking lot. (1267 Highway 395 N, Gardnerville, NV 89410)

Food Concessions will be available for those looking to grab a bite to eat, and Official KFD merchandise will be available for purchase.

This year’s event t-shirt design was drawn by ten year old Darla of Douglas County and will be available in both kid and adult sizes.

All proceeds from T-Shirt sales will go toward the event’s T-Shirt Design Contest for the 2026 Derby.

All children are welcome to submit their design at our retail table throughout the Derby weekend.

The Kids’ Fishing Derby has been a longstanding tradition for many Carson Valley residents for over three decades. As a 501(c) Non-Profit organization, the Derby relies on the efforts of volunteers and community donations to make the event a success.

Annually, the Derby draws an average of 1,500 children and their families to Lampe Park with one common goal: To get kids hooked on fishing and spending time outdoors.

Want to help? Donate raffle prizes or volunteer your time

All donations given to the KFD directly benefit its child anglers in the form of purchased fish, bait and tackle, prizes and more.

Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase at $2 each or 6 tickets for $10. Winners need not be present to win. This year’s raffle includes upwards of 140 prizes, with the Grand Prizes being

(1) Two night stay, one day boat rental at Twin Lakes Resort in Bridgeport, CA
(1) four person chartered fishing trip on Lake Tahoe, courtesy of Tahoe Sportsfishing
(1) $300 Target gift card

Those interested in donating to the KFD Raffle can contact Tom Zogorski at TomZGolf@earthlink.net.

An estimated 300 Volunteers are needed to make the event a success, and help is still needed in all areas of the event.

With plenty of work to go around, there is a job for everyone, even those who prefer not to handle fish.

Volunteers are needed to help the kids on the creek, as well as in Fish Cleaning, Food and Retail Sales, Prize Distribution and more.

Volunteers must be at least 13 years old with an adult Sponsor to accompany them at the Derby.
