A Life Full of Grace
Hattie Juanita “Nita” (Brown) Baker was born on April 7, 1945, in Emporia, Virginia, the beloved eldest daughter of Clinton and Rosa Brown. As the first daughter of seven children, Nita naturally embraced the role of nurturer and protector, always looking out for her siblings with love and care.
She later made her home in Petersburg, Virginia, where she met and married her soulmate, Morris Baker of the Prince George/Petersburg area. Their union was a beautiful testament to love, faith, and commitment. Together, they raised six children and built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and devotion.
For more than sixty years, Nita was a faithful and dedicated member of Refuge Temple Church. Her love for God was evident in every aspect of her life—from her gentle spirit to her unwavering kindness. She served her church and community with humility and joy, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a comforting word.
Nita is survived by her loving husband, Morris Baker; her brothers, Shelton Brown and Donald Brown; her six children, Carlton Baker, Norma Baker, Wendy Baker Owen, Rhonda Baker Greene, Monte Baker and Charles Baker; her nine grandchildren, Cayla Baker, Chasiti Baker, Braylen Baker, Jasmond Baker, Maurice Baker, Donquese Baker, Courtney Baker, Roderick Owen and Derrick Owen, as well as five great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of her heart and her legacy.
A Heart That Nourished
Nita was the heart of her family—a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt whose love was felt in every meal she prepared and every moment she shared. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and celebration, where her famous potato salad, rice, and banana pudding became cherished traditions. Her apple and pear preserves were sweet reminders of her creativity and care.
She had a gift for making people feel seen and loved. Her laughter was healing, her hugs unforgettable, and her presence a blessing. Whether through a thoughtful yard-sale treasure or a surprise treat she knew you’d adore, Nita had a way of saying, “I’m thinking of you,” without needing words.
Her memory was extraordinary—if you ever mentioned something in passing, she remembered. And if she saw something she thought you’d love, she made sure it found its way to you—always with a smile and a story.
A Legacy of Love
Nita’s love for God, her family, and her spiritual brothers and sisters shone brightly in everything she did. Her faith was not just spoken—it was lived. She was a quiet force of compassion, generosity, and joy, and her life was a reflection of the grace she so deeply believed in.
Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find peace in knowing she is resting, free from pain, embraced by the promise of eternal life. We hold close the hope that she will be remembered by our Creator, and that one day, we will see her again in a world without sorrow (Job 14:14-15; Revelation 21:4).
Nita’s legacy lives on in every life she touched, every recipe passed down, and every act of love inspired by her example. She was truly one of a kind—and she will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered.
A Homegoing Celebration will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at Refuge Temple of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 1890 Boydton Plank Rd., Petersburg, VA. Elder Jerry K. Rose, pastor will officiate. She will be laid to rest at Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Petersburg, VA.
