In Loving Memory of Guss Crowe

August 1927 – July 24, 2025

Born in Fairfield, Iowa, in August 1927, Guss was the sixth of eight siblings. Raised in the difficult years following the Great Depression, his family later relocated to the Quad Cities along the Mississippi River in Illinois. Despite the challenges of poverty, Guss contributed from a young age, delivering newspapers to help support his household. He gained early knowledge of construction from his father and developed a strong work ethic that would serve him throughout his life.

At age 18, Guss entered the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to manage German prisoners and assist returning American soldiers following World War II.

In 1952, Guss drove to California, seeking new opportunities. He earned a degree in Production Management from UCLA in 1956 and later completed a program in Financial Planning at USC. His professional career flourished at Hughes Management’s electronics division in Newport Beach, where he worked as a manager until his retirement in 1989.

Golf was a lifelong passion for Guss—he played regularly and was a proud member of Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena. In retirement, he taught himself Microsoft Excel, applying his talent for mathematics to personal finance. He was also dedicated to physical wellness, frequenting the gym and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Guss had a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly opera and symphonic music. A lover of travel, he enjoyed cruising and exploring the United States by car. He was a poet at heart, often reciting verses by Robert Burns, Longfellow, and Thomas Moore from memory. Known for his dry wit, he could always be counted on to share a joke or two.

He was a man of quiet generosity and kindness, with a special affection for children, despite not having any of his own. Guss passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, at the Silverado Memory Care Unit in Alhambra, where he had resided for three years.

In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated, and his ashes will be laid to rest in both Maine and Illinois. No formal service is planned at this time.
