Gladstone Gordon

Born on January 22, 1944, in St. Andrew, Jamaica, Gladstone George Gordon was the cherished son of Mavis Warren. Affectionately known as “Sweetie” and “Glabba,” Gladstone showed a spirited curiosity and a passion for life from an early age – traits that would define his remarkable journey.

He was lovingly raised by his mother, Mavis, and her brother, Uncle Vin, both of whom have passed away. From his mother’s side, Gladstone had five siblings: Joan and Khadija (Aunty Mags), who survived him, Paulette (Junie), Annmarie (Annie), and Noel, who predeceased him.

Gladstone leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He is survived by his two sons, Michael and Wayne, Waynes’s wife Sandra, and daughter Julie. His memory also lives on through his five grandchildren – Christopher, Javon, and Dwayne – and six great-grandchildren. He is also mourned by Aunt Olga, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A man of wit and warmth, Gladstone had a gift for humor and storytelling. At family gatherings, he was the life of the party, often saying with a smile, “Don’t believe everything I say – some of it is lies,” leaving everyone in fits of laughter.

Gladstone was known for his thriftiness, a value he instilled in himself from an early age. He believed in saving diligently – if he earned a dollar, he’d spend fifty cents and save the rest. His frequent reminder was, “What if…?” – always thinking ahead.

A true people person, Gladstone’s kindness and generosity was evident throughout his life. He ensured that no one around him ever went hungry. Though his upbringing was not easy, he strived to be his best and often said, “People can only do their best the way they know how,” and indeed, he did just that.

Gladstone’s love for music was deep and enduring. As a teenager, he showcased his dance moves on Jamaica’s local television show Teenage Dance Party (formerly aired on JBC, now TVJ). His charisma earned him the title of “Boy of the Year” at the Mighty Vikings Fan Club, winning him a trip to the Cayman Islands – his first major travel opportunity. Thus sparking his passion for exploring the world.

He later secured a visa to the United States, where he reunited with his father for three weeks. Upon his return to Jamaica, he was selected to work as a cook at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Despite this opportunity, his heart remained set on returning to the U.S., a dream that came true after he met and married his beloved wife, Melissa, now also deceased.

In his later years, Gladstone suffered a stroke and entered a rehabilitation center. Though his health declined, and he spent time in hospice care, he defied expectations and lived another two years, a testament to his strength and the grace of God.

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Gladstone George Gordon peacefully transitioned from this life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His wisdom, humor, and compassionate spirit will live on in our hearts.

Rest in peace, Gladstone. Your legacy is a light that will never be dim.
